Are 2nd gen trucks really selling for prices in the $26k-28k range? This dealer in Portland, Oregon has three trucks priced that way. They look super clean and if that is normal pricing then I have a good investment mine is a just about a carbon copy of the white 2001 with addition of a custom aluminum bed with about double miles however.

No... Three sitting on the lot not moving should answer that question. However due to lack of supply anything used is at a premium price at this time. If you are thinking about selling do it and do it now with a high price. A quick scan of the ads will show you the lack of supply and the rest are way overpriced units just sitting.

I've seen a few low mile 2nd gens listed in the Denver area in the mid 20k range the last few months. I don't know what they sold for but the listings only seem to last a few days.

Thanks for comments, I thought those three trucks at the link I posted high too, but if they can get anywhere close to 20k I guess it shows in good condition these old trucks are holding value at least here in the PNW.

There are people out there that would jump on those trucks, they will be looking for the best bang for the buck. No smog and basically a truck you can still work on for the most part. 2nd gens compared to todays are basically a no frills vehicle without all the glamour stuff. My 99 will be with me till the end unless something really drastic should happen to it but I am a very basic person and do not need heated/cooled seats, steering wheel and gizmo's.

I track my costs as does most independent business owners. I spend less than 10 cents per mile in maintenance compared to a bit over 15 cents per mile in fuel. I'd love to see the long term cost of operating a 3rd or 4th gen commercially. Fuel would probably be less but I'd bet the maintenance would be quite higher.

From what I have read I doubt fuel would be less and for a while now they have the pesky DEF.

The only problem with mechanical engines is fuel economy suffers due to fixed injection timing. A computer controlled injection pump has proven itself to be a lot more efficient.

I paid $14k a few months ago for my '96 Cummins 2500 standard cab with 4wd, 5 spd, Spicer 80 diff with 3.54 gears, and only 120k miles, after looking for months. It is a OR/CA truck with no rust. That was what I was looking for, so I guess it was worth the wait and $.

It has Banks Power Pack with a compression brake that required adding stronger exhaust valve springs, along with rear overloads, torsion bar, and rear air bags. I wasn't really looking for the Power Pack or compression brake, but it came with the truck. Perhaps it will come to be appreciated. We will be hauling a '96 Lance 945 camper (about 4k lbs) coast to coast with it every year and I thought it would be a dependable truck that wouldn't be too difficult to repair along the road, if need be. The '89 W250 we had before it was that way.

Thanks for the good information John. Now if I can just remember to turn it on. :)

The previous two trucks we had for a span of more than 40 years hauling campers around 8k miles each year didn't have that, so it will be a new experience for me.

Thanks again,

Steve

Exhaust brake, YES! I have had one on my 2001 since early on, replaced the brakes once in 315k. I think it well worth the initial cost. Rarely need to use the brakes except in an emergency stop or coming to full stop, downhill grades, etc. rarely needed.

BINGO DavidC! Got mine in 5/01 for 18k from a "dealer" in Yorktown Heights, NY. It had 75k miles on it. Was a contractor's truck, had pee gravel stuck between grooves of bedliner, tons of fuel receipts and change everywhere. After they detailed it when I got home to Levittown PA I took back seat out and recleaned the interior I found like another $20 in change and a picture of truck with a trailer and backhoe loaded on it. Still have original window sticker ($38,800) and all owners manuals in the nice black vinyl folder. Keeping it "forever". Present miles, a mere 254k.

I think you should post that question on the 4th Gen forum...I think some might have the numbers and it would be interesting to find out.

To provide another data point, I bought my 01 in July from the 4th owner. It's a 4x4 Quad Cab Short Bed, Automatic, all stock. Has every option except the snow plow package. It had 176k miles on it and a bunch of the known issues addressed. FASS Titanium lift pump, Industrial Injection VP44, all new vented cross drilled disc brakes, steering upgraded to Gen 4, steering brace, Suspension Maxx sway bar links. Everything worked except the intermittent wipers, and the guy gave me a box of spare parts. Original paint (White) looks almost new. It lived in AZ for 15 years before moving to MN and in spite of Ziebart and undercoat when new, and lots of additional undercoat there were just a few rust spots beginning which I quickly dealt with. I was happy to pay $16k given how much the owner knew about Gen 2's and how he had taken care of the truck. Anything at a dealer was asking way more than that, most above $20k and the real low mileage ones close to $30k. I love the truck and will keep it as long as I can. Be patient, look at Craigslist, AutoTempest, forums. Dealers are all over these and asking absurd $$'s.
