Fender for the win.

Less than 90 seconds to get the OE filter off and out without spilling a drop. Less than 5 minutes for a complete filter change.

It takes more than 5 minutes just to pull and reinstall the intake.

No more thru the top for me.

Uh oh! Cue Ron in 3....2.....1......:D

I have one more "team through the fender" t-shirt. I'll put in it the mail for you!
:p

Not sure where I acquired it, but I have an oil filter cup wrench the fit the LF16035 filter I use that has an offset place to put in a 3/8" drive ratchet for removal. It has the standard center location as well. The offset really helps with some torque to remove a stubborn filter when removing thru the fender location. Sometimes being a tool pack-rat has its advantages! :D

I used the filter socket , until I switched to the Donaldson filter , doesn’t work on it . I just use the old style filter wrench now , still not an issue thru the fender .

And here we go .:D Took me only once to cure me doing it thru the top . Always thru the fender now . Usually the only one that argues has never even attempted to go thru the fender . With the filter cap I’m probably 2-3 minutes removing , and replacing , although never in a rush .

Yes I replace the oil with all three gallons . These oil and filter threads are fun !!!!!

5 minutes? Must have had a beer also.

That’s standard, but by the time you grab tools, remove parts, remove intake, and then reinstall the intake (not counting the time to R&R the filter) you could be done with the filter change thru the fender.

Not to mention you run the risk of not getting a good intake seal and dusting a turbo. The risk is low, but still higher than leaving the intake installed.

But the debate on going thru the top is diminishing. Could they be seeing the light ?

5/16" nut driver and filter strap wrench is seconds away. I already have my step stool out for adding oil so that does not count. Don't need no silly plug to keep oil from spilling as I do add one quart to filter before install. Don't need a special cup for the bottom of the filter that does not work on the AMZ/OIL or Donaldson filters. At least their are no sky is falling comments because the turbo is exposed on the 19's and up now.

From the top = free and easy.

Oh I guess it takes no time to get the tools for the thru fender route.

Not sure what the big hurry is, you can't remove the filter until it's drained back unless you want a mess??? Sure a gallon ziplock works. I let mine drain for hours at a minimum and usually overnight. I am usually changing fuel filters at the same time so no hurry. Then I add ONLY 11-2/3 quarts. :D

Didn’t wait 4 hours and didn’t have a mess. Don’t need a step stool to add oil.

Even with pulling the intake tube there is the block heater chord and other wiring to deal with. In no way is thru the top an easier, better, or faster option.

Not sure why you would want to complicate the change?

When I first joined here , and read the going thru the top
, that’s what I did . It baffled me as to why , then I seen a thread going thru the fender , so I tried it that way , never looked back .

I’ll repeat , because the debate goes on with basically one member that as far as we know has never changed that filter thru the fender , yet makes the argument with other members that have tried both ways , and prefers thru the fender . But as said these filter change threads are fun , a bit silly , but fun . :)

In reality , it doesn’t matter how you do it , if you liking taking things apart , so be it . ;)

I know there is an explanation that must make sense on 11-2/3 quarts, but I’m sure it escapes a few , maybe you can enlighten.

I think I have explained many times. The pan does NOT FULLY DRAIN. MY truck is at the top of the full mark setting on level ground.

i changed oil on a 19 and nothing was in my way. I don’t NEED a step stool it’s simply easier to pour a 10 quart container bring elevated.

No the pan doesn’t fully drain, and neither does the head. That being said just adding 3 gallons has never put me over the safe zone, so 3 gallons it is.

I haven’t used the 2.5 gallon jugs since I had a bypass and the truck took 3.5 gallons. The 1 gallon jugs are easier to store, but it is slightly cheaper to get 2x 2.5 and 1x 1.0 for two years worth of oil changes. Maybe I’ll think about it at my next reorder point.

My 18 is a tight squeak getting the filter out as an A/C line is in the way taking the filter out the fender. Just A little more production variation would require bending the line to get the filter to fit through the hole in the fender.

It’s always nice to read about alternative ways to do things @Cummins12V98

I found the same on the ‘18 and went out the top since it was faster and easier.

Lots more room in the fender opening on the ‘22.

Do you have a pic so we can see how RAM executed this through the fender well filter change?
