CA DMV

It may not be this way everywhere and probably not popular to say, but in the sixteen years I have been dealing with the California DMV I would evaluate the service I have gotten from the Placerville office as courteous, efficient, and friendly.

When I went in to register my new truck was I a little grumpy because I had to give up 7. 25% of the purchase price? You bet.

I have to agree that even here in the big city the personnel were not rude or arrogant as some have expressed, I think the main gripe is the stupid rules we have to contend with that makes the experience inconvenient. After my vehicle inspection I thought I was done, then they informed me that I had to go to a truck scale and get a weight ticket, which meant another trip to the DMV office, now why couldn't they just use the shipping weight from my invoice which was actually more correct because I just filled up the tank which made it weigh a couple of hundred pounds more. Just venting.

I hear you on this. If I had known I would have weighed the truck when low on fuel and before the spray-in bed liner. Oh well, too late smart and too soon old.

The best thing in Calif when you register the truck as far as weight goes is to #1. Remove rear bumper, 2. Remove spare tire, 3. Remove rear seat. 4. Remove outside duals if it has them. 5. Empty the fuel tank. 6. Remove the tailgate.

several years ago, I had to register a Furd Crew cab Dually and the guy that "was" going to weigh it told me to go back home and shed the above items. That brought it just under 6000 lbs and saved me a ton of $$$$. You can get a Dodge Cummins under the nasty 7000 mark and possible the 6000 if you get creative with what you remove. All fair in love, war, and DMV politics.

DMV has a weight figure at every 1,000 pounds...

Im soooo happy not to be living under the rules of California anymore!!!

Oregon= No smog certs, no sales tax, no weight fees, $15 a year tags!:--) :--) :--) Oo.

VIN numbers/codes

“to protect the consumer from theft and possible fraud the manufacture is required to include a CHECK DIGIT at the ninth position of the VIN. The check digit is used by the manufacture and GOVERNMENT AGENCIES to verify the authenticity of the vehicle and official documentation”

The formula is not released to the general public.

:{

FROM THE "03" Owners manual

That formula is available from someone on the site. I just don't remember where I saw it right now, but it is available.

It would be interesting to compare the ninth digit in our CA VINs. Frankly, I would not hesitate to consider the valve cover thing. All 04. 5s are identical.

I would be interested in hearing from someone who DID order a CA truck from a border state... when you went to the DMV, did they write down the information on the sticker, or just look at it to verify that it was indeed there?

This is the difference I read in another thread on this subject.

50 state and cal engines are the same emissions but the Cal models have a additional light and sensors that lights if the parameters that promote good emissions are exceeded.

I had a strange thought after reading all of this, I wonder if the state of CA. thinks that if there are only vehicles that conform to their emmissions standards running in that state that the supposed pollution from neighboring states can't filter over, I have never understood that place out there and thank God and all above i don't live there.

I figure if my truck and personal belongings arent welcome then IM not either.

the DMV person came out and looked under the hood. I showed her the sticker and she said OK no problem, she did NOT write anything down. She did not except the weight figure from the MSO. I had it weighed at a truck stop. With 3/4 tank of deisel it came in at 6900 lbs. about 200 more then the MSO. At least it came in less then 7000!My truck came from Lithia Dodge in Eugene Oregon.

That's because we're our own country, the People's Republic of California. Check your assault weapons and 92 octane at the door. It's all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

trailexplorer: Here's another thought, go to the dealership and try to order a CA valve cover. See what they say and check if they run your VIN.

Ahscrewit. Make a friend w/ a CA valve cover.

I don't believe the above to be true.

I attended the free seminar Diesel 101 offered by Carson Dodge in Carson City, NV where I bought my truck. John Holmes, columnist for TDR, was the presenter. BTW, it was very informative and worthwhile.

I asked about the difference between CA trucks and other states. This is what I remember being told. All 04. 5s are identical. The only difference is that most states accept the emissions testing of a representitive sample while CA wants 'each and every' truck tested individually. The CA sticker says that this was done.

CA trucks are orderded from the factory with a special CA code, "YCF - Emissions Border States (Calif)" is a line item on my order sheet.

If the only real difference between a 50 state truck and a CA truck is 100% inspection, a reasonable person would think that a simple emissions test of an out of state vehicle should be sufficient.

Agreed for a 'reasonable person', but we are talking California Air Resources Board here.

04.5 reg

Well i am still waiting to find out from an inside source if CA DMV did get a hold of my info. As for the dealer they will buy the truck back if Ca did in fact get my info (they tell me that now)... Probably for less than I payed plus purchasing an 05 less the excellent rebates. Otherwise i can reg. out of state till 7500 miles and then bring it back. Thank again for all your help out there. Hope this helps others. I will keep all informed.

Yes, California can never make any sense guys. That would be way to easy and the correct way to do it. We need to spend lots of money and F*ck up a lot to be a true Californian!

Good luck, make them buy it back for full price!

erik

My understanding is that only difference between a 50 state and CA model is the engine sticker verbage and the CA model has an 02 sensor that does nothing else but make an idiot light glow on your dash that indicates that emmissions are out of wack.

Put 8200 on mine and registered it in CA with no problems.
