I have an 052500 4x4 5. 9L diesel, was wondering what average oil pressure reading on dash guage should be. Mine reads about just over 40 on factory guage while driving and goes down to about 20-25 at idle. The idle reading is actually about half way between first grey hash mark and second grey hash mark right at 40. Just wondering what other trucks are doing, is this normal?

well remember these are just "idiot gauges" they can be programmed to what makes you feel good sounds pretty close to mine

Ya, the factory gage is pure show and the only time it going to show anything else is if you lose pressure completely. The "sending unit" for it is just a switch.

So, do yall think I should order a mechanical guage and tee off of oil sender?

Most of us have done that. Except it's easier to use the oil ports atop the filter housing.

Sender threads are something like M14x1. 0 (with an o-ring, but not a face seal fitting). Tough to get fittings for something like that.

That's what I did. I didn't want to use the port on the housing for a couple of reasons. One, the run to the cab for the wiring was much longer, and would have required splicing wires, not impossible or difficult but it was unnecessary. Also I wanted to see what the pressure was like on the other side of the block, after the filters and thru the block. I put my sender above the ECM. The OE gauge is only "accurate" at 1200-1300 rpms on warm oil.

About 18 hot and at idle, and just under 80 when cold and above 1500 rpms. Normal cruise is 55-60, and will drop to 40 when pulling hills with high EGT's and high coolant temps.

There is an internal bypass that tries to keep the max pressure at 75. This avoids excessive pressure when cold, and from what I have seen it works pretty good.
