Ford F350 W/Cummins Shift prob. Manual

Pretty Cool

that will be one pullin son of a gun!!!! :D ive got nearly the same mods but with stock turbo. cant wait to see the final pictures. that man will be passing that truck down to his great grand kids(now that a real engine is in that land barge) keep up the good work!!!!! Jeremy

..

Actually knowing him, he'll be tired of it in a year or so especially if a bigger Cummins comes out for 07' or 08' model trucks... . but i will personally whip his ***** if he sells that thing off after these mods and the money he is spending. It's not practical for what i do, otherwise i'd buy it off him. . lol :p

Kenny can tell you all about the problems I had with my '05 power joke. The truck had only 36,000 miles on it and I lost the motor. I was only towing 26,500lbs. The truck is rated at 30,000lbs. I think its a very smart move to put the cummins in that truck. My truck was down for a month and a half and almost lost me my business.

If you relied on Bison Ford to fix it, I am amazed you had it back that quick. I would have sent it to Browning with a few cases of whiskey and told them to make it dissapear. After all, Ford's have the highest resale value supposedly, might be worth the claim.

I've seen too many 6. 0's die when I was in MT, most were nothing but horse hag rigs. I'll never own one, unless its slated to get a "big three diesel", (Cat, Detroit, Cummins). Til then, I'll happily live with my dodge with over 260,000 miles on it, the cab might be falling apart, but it still has more life left in it than any truck I have ever owned, even new.

This may seem like a new guy question but how can you put an older engine in a new truck and get it registered? Is it due to the weight rating of that particular truck?

SHHHHHHHHHHH,, don't tell anyone :)

Well, for comercial trucks, I might wanna be more legal.

But for your personal car/truck, would you really tell the state that you have 200 more hp over stock?

As Jason said, the main issue is whether you tell the DMV or other govt entity you have changed things from stock.

The big issue with repowers is going from Gasoline to Diesel. Diesel to diesel repowers are not so easy for the DMV or Smog laws to catch since there is no smog inspection for a diesel truck. (this may have changed in CA, but last I knew, they were exempt).

The only thing that will really get you in trouble is if you repower a newer gasoline truck with a diesel engine tagged older than the truck's manufacturign date. The inspectors will want to see the data plate on the engine to approve the repower legally.

Even with a commercial truck, few inspectors will pick up on the different engine unless you have blatently pointed it out with either stickers, or aftermarket parts that will make them start looking for CARB certified labels for emissions compliance, then they may catch you.

Personally, I would look for a state that is not smog crazy and establish an LLC for registration and titling of the truck. If the truck is registered and owned by an LLC corporation based in a state such as Montana, AND NOT PERSONALLY OWNED on the registration or title, then CA or other liberal environmentalist crazed states can't do anything about it. Meeting the federal emission as much as you can is a wise choice no matter where you are at.

Bottom line for any conversion, keep the engine compartment's appearance relatively factory whenever possible. Most of all, keep your mouth shut about the repower when talking with tree huggers and liberal wieners.

Still are exempt and the day they make us smog a diesel is the day I will be moving out of CA and leaving that jerk of a CHP officer at the border a nice big cloud of black smoke :D

Believe me it isn't fixed right but it does run. Atleast it was when I traded it in on a new Dodge. I have learned my lesson and will stick with Dodges from now on. I don't know why I didn't in the first place. I love them so much I now own 4 of them. '89, '03, '06, '06.

it's funny that someone mentioned only getting one of the big 3, a cat, detroit or cummins in a truck. DC owns Detroit which means they now own 2 major diesel engine manufacturers. I wonder what's going to happen when the contract runs out with Cummins?

50 state

This truck has the 50 states emissions tag on it. . there will be no reason for California DMV to check and what does the average DMV worker know between a Cummins and a 6 litre? lol NOTHIN' :-laf

My luck the DMV worker would be a diesel junkie and fine me.

I wouldn't be worried about the registration trolls, they're too worried about getting to take their break far enough from the buildings to smoke every 30 minutes to be any threat that involves them thinking abou their jobs.

The CHP sitting on the on ramps with their new fangled tailpipe laser guns would be the only unknown concern for me. A friend of mine in San Diego has been waiting to hear back about his neighbor's car over a smog compliance impound from these devices. (mustang '98 model with a 351 block shoehorned in it), it is the talk of their block, mainly because they were all glad to not have to hear it at 5 am when he left for work. I doubt they'll be measuring particulates on diesel pickups, but who knows with CA's "clean air crisis" legislature.

California makes fleets with 2 or more diesel powered vehicles of 6000lb GVW and higher to do opacity tests yearly. Right now there really is no tracking of it, you just do it and keep the papers in your file cabinet. Don't be too surprised if here in the not to distant future it comes to everyone in the state. My truck hardly smokes anyway, not too worried..... yet.

Travis. .

so are you going to be able to interfae all the goodies of the ford with the 24valve. Like the dash unit etc. or do you have to create a new gauge cluster?

Intresting project please post lots of pics, updating ytour website with lots of pics regualry would be a major plus

Thanks Travis

LOL! We are going to start tearing it apart tomorrow, had to wrap up the other two so they can go home, yes, everything in the Ford will work as before (dash, lights etc) these new vehicles get pretty involved when it comes to the electronics but we have alot of experience and learn more with each project-i will be taking pictures!!!

Rick is sitting here with me reading this thread as I type this. He is very excited about this conversion. I am too. I can't wait to see it. As soon as it get back here I have some work of my own to do to this truck. For all that don't already know, this truck is beingbuilt to pull a tandem dual gooseneck trailer loaded with a Case 580 Super M plus Back Hoe with a drilling attachment and an assortment of drill bits. Total vehicle weight when he towed it with his 05 dodge with a 100 gal diesel transfer was 38K lbs. so he will be towing around 25-28K lbs with this rig. I think he has found the ideal set up. We are all excited about the conversion. Oo.

I really hope you're at least opting for an exhaust brake with that kind of load  My truck has seen similar loads in the rural areas of Montana, but I don't think I'd be comfortable to be dragging that weight around with anything short of a "true" MDT with air brakes on both the truck and trailer. Especially in the heavier populated areas of the west coast. :(

Keep in mind, with electric brakes, you're only one wire or maybe a fuse away from loosing your trailer brakes :--)

The exhaust brake won't guarantee your ability to stop, but it sure has helped me to reduce the # of brake jobs on my Dodge. Hopefully, you have the larger options brakes on the 550.

There's no doubt about it, you'll have one heck of a truck with the new repower. Just make sure you keep all the CA eco friendly compact cars out of the the trucks Teeth (grill) :-laf
