Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Mystery water leak

Hi all, So I just purchased my son a 1998.5 24V 4WD. I serviced everything, I went to service the Trans today , change governors and adjust the bans along with a fluid change.

I started with the front band which is done from the outside and it just turned in much further then I thought it should, I pulled the band and there was no material left and the drum has wear. I took the truck to a Trans shop as I just don't feel that comfortable or have the time to get into this project.

It's Sunday so I have not spoke to the shop but what am I looking at here? What should we do? The trans appeared to shift fine, I was only doing maintenance. Anything I should have them do? I want to get it done right but honestly with purchasing the truck and I just purchased a ton of new parts for the front end I would like to try and limit the cost if not needed.

I am guessing at least both Bands and maybe one drum? Can they tell if clutches and what not are good or should they be replaced?

Does trans have to come out?

Thanks

I’ll tell you this, the transmission behind a Cummins is not where you want to try to pinch pennies. If you do it right, you’ll have years and many miles of trouble-free enjoyable service. If you try to cut corners, you’ll be having another expensive repair before you know it. Seems lately most folks don’t want to spend the money or wait to get the good stuff.

My recommendation, as always, is go with Goerend.

I understand that , I want it done right, just not sure what should be done. The Trans shifted and seemed fine that's why I was surprised to see the band like it was. I really just don't know what I am looking at here, iv always been a manual person. We haven't even put the truck on the road yet. Hopefully it's a somewhat affordable repair even doing it right.

It was Sunday when I dropped the truck off and spoke to shop owners wife briefly. The shop does have a good rep. I'll call them today if I can get a rebuild for around 3k I'd be okay with that. I don't want to cut corners but also don't want 10 k into it. I'll post pic of the drum.

I've read of bands that can be slipped out in the truck, but that drum looks pretty worn.

Unfortunately these things are like the kids book, When you give a mouse a cookie, he will want a drink, when he gets the drink he will want this then that.

@Ozymandias is having his done at a shop soon, so maybe he can provide some feedback.

My experience was I got about 90% done with my 47RE and failed to finish the project. A large reason decent parts houses dislike selling to non professional shops. I would have saved alot going with a rebuilt unit.

But every case is different, what works for one rig probably won't work for the next.

So the transmission shop suggested a I do a Band for now, They said it is not as bad as the picture makes it out to be and I should get a lot of miles on it.The band with labor /fluid was very reasonable. Going to go that route and rebuild it later after I get to know the truck better and come up with a plan for it which will help me decided on the how serious i'll go with the Trans. He gave me a price of $4,200 for full rebuild Billet convertor and so on.

So I was able to speak to the 2nd owner ( really helpful guy who did ask if He could buy truck back ), the Trans was rebuilt about 30 K ago with a Billet convertor ( unsure of stall hes going to try and find the paperwork ),Billet input and output shafts with upgrade sensors which I had replaced again with the band. The shop said that the Drum isn't as bad as the picture made it look and it should hold up fine and from what they can see the trans appears to be in good shape. The truck shifts very well now and hopefully it will hold up for a while.

Fire Punk sent me Rostra sensors when i ordered and they advertised BW Sensors, Shop said the BW are better so i had them install those. They were very fair on the price I did ask them how they adjusted the bands and he said they prefer to do it by the gap between rocker and spring and they also replaced the adjuster plate and fork with Billet parts ( My terminology is probably off a bit )
