15K mile fluid and filter service

15 k miles on fluid change? I know that is what they call for but I just can’t allow my self to go past 10k . All my trucks before this one oil was dumped at 5k. Rear ends the first 20k then once a year after no matter how many miles. Same with the transmission. Fuel always same time as oil. Hey I’m dirty an the drain pan is out what is one more item. with that kind of attention many happy miles are ahead for any engine/ transmission/ rear end.

Oil wasn’t part of the service. I’ve already changed it twice.

Based on the condition of this rear diff fluid I’m glad I don’t wait until 20K and probably should have changed it sooner. Not sure how long I’ll run this fluid. I went 50K on my 05 and it always looked/felt new but that was with 4 extra quarts.

Fuel filters will stick to 15K miles, as over servicing fuel filters isn’t advised.

Having built a few engines, marine use. I’m a strong believer in getting the break in oil out after the first easy thousand miles. Nothing will help an engine last longer than fresh clean oil. And allowing the rings to fully seat before working the daylights out of it.

Having bought this one used I didn’t get the first oil out until 4K miles. The selling dealership told me it was changed, but I’m fairly confident the service department skipped it.

ED, you are slightly contradicting yourself. Having come from marine engines where current service intervals of similar engines are 500 hrs which has been the 6.7 standard in construction/Ag/marine for many years now.

At 10,000 miles unless you have extensive idle time or run an extremely low avg mph you'll be doing good to break 350 hrs, and that's being very generous.

And has anyone worked with Detroit's new DD8 engine? 45,000 mile oil change intervals....and that is the severe duty cycle. The long long haul cycle runs out to 60,000 miles, both oil and fuel filter service. Granted these vocational engines run a larger sump than what you will ever find in a pickup but it goes to show just how capable modern oil really is.

Hmm.. I have about 19k and I wasn't thinking about changing diff fluids til about 30k...atleast.. I think after reading this I'm going to start ordering some amsoil for the front and rear diffs real soon.

Bought the truck used with 16k on her and just changed out the engine oil with amsoil 15w-40, dealership said they changed it when I picked it up, but I don't trust them for anything. Its worth the peace of mind to me.

If you tow heavy or tow a lot get the 75-110 SevereGear for the rear and 75-90 front.

I don’t tow very heavy so I think the 75w-90 should be fine.

It would be nice if the dam truck came with a paper manual to look at these things!

The bad thing about logging into Amsoil on my preferred customer account is i inevitably get a sales email asking me why i didn't purchase what i looked at. So yes, i got an email telling me how great their severe gear 75w 90 gear oil is......

I paid $13.90 for the 8 quarts I received today. The squeeze bottles are pretty handy. Fluid looked OK at 19,000 miles and I took a sample anyway to see what they say. The magnet had a little fuz. Gears looked good. Changed the transfer case, it looked perfect, no metal at all in the drain pan. I took it around the block and fuel economy was up 40%, maybe more!

My highest combined was the Columbus trip at about 14k. I'll drop off the sample when I get a chance. Iron has to be high as there isn't anywhere for it to go but the magnet.

Forget about the front diff at it is resting useless all the time except when in 4WD. CAD matters.
Change that oil is a waste of money and resources.
