Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 1999 will not start

I had a customer call about his 1999 24 valve not starting. He said it was running the other day and when he came back out of the house, the truck was not running. I went on a service call and looked the truck over. It has a FASS fuel system on the truck. I cranked the engine over for a few seconds and quit. I could hear the FASS pump running. I loosened the line coming from the FASS pump to the VP44. After cranking the engine for a bit, I ran to the engine compartment and could see fuel coming out of the loosened fitting on the pump. I was not able to check fuel pressure, but know there is fuel to the pump. I do not get any smoke out the exhaust while cranking the engine over. I am thinking something has gone bad in the VP44 pump. The owner replaced the fuel filters in the last 3-4 weeks. I also checked for any blown fuses, but did not find any. Anyone think I am on the right track? Thanks.

I would put a fuel pressure gauge on at the pump even though you have fuel doesn't mean you have pressure & I would then loosen a couple of injector lines & turn engine over to see if you have any pressure. Maybe got air in the system when he changed filters.

Check the AIT sensor near the lift pump in between the lines ,clean and or replace ,when removed it has a ball in a plastic cage on the tip like a spark plug it can and will gum up and cause hard or no start or ruff/loss of power . Ron

The early vp44's had a thin diaphram that regulated fuel pressure internally, they often rupture with the addition of increased fuel pressure from a fass. Try pulling the relay for the fass and see if it fires. If it does wire a hobbs switch into the fass relay off the oil filter boss so the fass dosen't kick on untill the engine starts. This prolonged my vp replacement for at least a year, he'll know when that is. (when you have to keep a can of starting fluid behind the seat)
