I get a harsh popping under full throttle around 2700 rpm. If I gradually run the rpm's up it doesn't do it, however runs a little rough. Fuel pressure is a little on the low side of specs but still within. Under full throttle drops to around 13-14 psi. Here's what I've tried... 2-lift pumps, 1-overflow (and checked again with overflow off 97'), timing is at 16 deg, I ran the valves last weekend, all supply and return lines have been checked, fuel filter, pre-heater screen, screen in tank. I'm out of ideas... . maybe I just need a bigger and better pump:D Apparently this little 175 pump isn't cutting it! There's a twelve pack coming to who ever can solve this:D :D

-Thanks guys

Hey Cord,

You still working in Vegas? You've done a lot to the truck since I last got a ride. I figured that you got that popping noise taken care of when you went with the larger delivery valves and governor spring kit.

I'm so sick of my 160hp pump and trying to squeeze more performance out of it. These smaller pumps don't handle extreme power and high RPMs like their big brothers. I've all but decided to get a new one from Piers.

Does your popping noise still sound like backfiring? Didn't it get slightly better when we put MY overflow valve in it? Did any modification make it worse?

I recently drilled out the banjo going into the filter. I don't know if it would help you, but it's free. My guess for your trouble is lack of fuel in some way or another. How high does your truck rev before you can feel your power being cut back? The popping noise seems to occur during the highest fuel usage. (i. e. high RPM and high power demands)

When you get back into College Station let me know and I'll come visit. I want a ride.

Good to hear from you Chris,

I'll back in BCS on the 15th. I've had a lot of fun and made a lot of money. Luckily I met a friend who helpled me get rid of all that extra cash. He has entirely to many goodies in his garage and Henderson is way to close to Las Vegas:D :D This popping has been the on going pain in my a**..... so this must be what hemroids feel like!! Lack of fuel is definately the problem or air in the fuel. When I put the first lift pump on it seemed to help for a little over two weeks but then began popping again. The 2nd lift pump didn't help at all. If I change fuel filters it helps for a couple of hours but still runs rough. When I checked the screen in the fuel tank I noticed that it held fuel. I was expecting the fuel to drain out of the screen leavnig the canister empty, but it didn't. I was on a tight time schedule and didn't have time to check it more thoroughly... . so here's your daily double: should the canister hold fuel?? Adding more power didn't affect the popping. I can turn 3 grand with it on the floor but I'm losing major HP after 2700 (when the popping starts). I should be able to turn well over that with full fuel at my current spring settings.

- I'll give you a call when I get back in town... . we'll have to make plans for the TX meet.

Cannister in tank

I'm almost positive the cannister has a check valve in it to keep it as full of fuel as possible. It allows a small constant supply of fuel even if you are low on fuel while climbing or descending a long steep hill rather than letting the pickup tube to run dry. And we all know what happen when the P/U tube runs dry and sucks air!

air in fuel

I talked to a guy that told me that he had a surge in the truck he was working on an it turned out to be the ,I think, fuel heater or some thing else in that area. He told me that he installed a earlier model fuel pump and did away with the heater and finally got rid of his problem. It was sucking air in the fuel system, which I probably not your problem. I had a friend that had problems with getting air in his fuel and he pulled the suction on the tank and put about 20 lb of air on it and blocked the other end, he said that the fuel line looked like a water sprinkler. Which is probably not your problem. LOL JIM P. S. If you hear of any one that has a 98 quad cab,4x4, 12v,5 SPEED, in excellant shape, low miles, red or maroon in color PLEASE send a email.
