2004 fuel smell

Thought I'd check in here before I get my truck on the lift tonight.

On my truck, I just started getting a diesel smell (110k on the truck, 12k on the injection pump) when sitting at idle coming through the air vents from under the hood. I took a quick look and can't find anything wet around the filter or lines.

My next look is more in depth at the back of the injection pump and from underneath.

Wondering if there are any common spots that others may have found leaks.



as a note, I'm running the fass aftermarket fuel pump.

I've also noticed that varmin have chewed all my underhood insulation. I need to make sure they didn't chew my rubber fuel line, but I don't think that's the case.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Also check the weather stripping on the hood near the windshield. If it is missing or bad you may get the under hood smell in your cab. Fresh air is pulled into the cab at the bootom of the windshield. My buddy purchased the filter from Genos and every time he used his windshield cleaner fluid it would soak the filter and he would get the smell from the fluid in his cab for hours.



You have to just check everything for leaks like you are going to but definitely check the cubby hole where fresh air comes in and the weather stripping. Even a tiny bit of diesel fuel will have a very strong odor.

Check #4 injector line very close, especially around the blue plastic clamp.

I had the same problem on my 01. It was the o-ring in the fuel filter drain valve

Took a better look tonight with a second person.

The fitting was wet where the number 6 line goes into the head. I tightened that up and then found a pinhole in the line right around where it goes past the pull tab for removing the engine. not sure if the tab rubbed a hole or if it was the mouse next I had in there that did it. Seems the mice have taking a liking to all my under hood insulation.



So it's off to the dealer tomorrow to order a new one.

As for your mice taking a liking to the insulation. This sounds weird but take a stuffed toy that looks like a cat and put it under you truck. I have the same problem with mice when camping. I was walking in a campground and the campground host had a stuffed toy under his truck and trailer I thought the man had been in the mountains to long. I asked he told me it works. So I tried it and maybe Ive been in the mountains to long but it works
