... I should have pressed you to double check the part numbers with them, I had a bad feeling...

They better be paying the freight this time....

And I have bought enough parts I know to verify when I can... should have. I will certainly mention the freight and we will see.... I don't hold out much hope. A lot of the businesses around here are not customer friendly, but they are the only game in town.

In reality, I should have just called Cummins, Southern Plains in Houston. I have had really good luck ordering from them, but it takes two days to get it without it costing an arm and leg.

Hey, coolant belching is only for 6.oh no's!
I definetly take out the air box. I also have a long 1/2 ratchet I use to wind off the tensioner, and a curve jaw vise grip I clamp on the sway bar to hold it.
I posted about that here a dog's age ago.

Good luck on the fix. I'm sure it'll be fine!

Thanks Wayne. This is the worst I have had on a water pump going out. In the past, I would find it leaking and change it before it came apart. The air box will be coming out. I think it will save a bunch of cursing and time. What does it take to get it out? I have never looked at it with removing it in mind and it has been dark every evening this week when I got home. Hope to get the parts today and put them in tomorrow afternoon.

It's just the sensor plug, hose clamp, a nut on the rad support, and a bolt or 2 under the filter itself. I'll try n look for the post I made about holding off the tensioner.

Checked the picture Wayne. That should help. Thanks.

Update: Got the correct parts last night and I am going to put them in this afternoon before dark I hope. They did drop the freight charge from the parts since the first time I got the wrong parts. I will let you know how it goes.

piUpdate: Got the new parts in and all is back together. New water pump, tensioner, belt, and coolant fill. No leaks as of now. I am posting pics of the pumps. If you look close at the old pump, you can see it came completely apart and eat on the engine slightly before the belt popped off. Seeing this, I am glad the belt came off. I caught them leaking and changed them before they came apart in the past. I never noticed this one leaking....

I noticed in the pictures, the new pump has a smaller shaft, I wonder if there will be any significance to that?

NIsaacs, I don't know. Time might tell. I do know the old pump is an aftermarket pump and the new pump is straight from Cummins. The bearing in the old pump had come apart and was letting the shaft wobble around and that is the reason the belt came off. I really can't complain, I got 124k miles out of the old pump. I really did not realize it had been on there that long.

ASSUMEING the bearing OD is the same ,this shaft size difference may alow for a slightly larger rolling elements . This would increase life/load rateing.

What was found on the PS pump failure?are the late model 5.9 belt driven? If so then carrie on .

Sounds like a good plan. I'm beginning to think replacing the water pump at 100k intervals is just preventive maintenance on these trucks. I'm getting close at 82k. I think I'll just replace it next time I do a coolant flush.

I'm at 212k miles on the original water pump.
