As much as the new trucks cost, why not pay for the dealer to install 4:10's, that way it should not harm your warranty and the cost is minimal at best considering they cost over 50K.
 
The cost You are looking at 2K+..... I am at a big loss why they will NOT just offer the 4:10 option, its wired. I can see it with MT BC the trans and clutch setup, But why NO SRW AT.

Only thing I can figure is Ram is trying to keep the government mandated fuel efficiency requirements for their 2013 lineup in check. Seems like there a big old gubbament formula for calculating what they must meet across their entire linup of cars each year.
Nothing against anybodys opinions, but I will NOT be talked into purchasing a truck to pull with that has 3:42 gears.
 
Like I mentioned in other threads ,I have NOT owned any truck in the Last 20 years without 4:10 gearing, If I video the logging with 3:42 gearing and Aisin RCS69 the load=APPS=RPM=Speed=Gear+Boost is sweet when towing or Not, TH and 5th work good in city Driving and towing, the real Test will come this winter when I go to The Rockies, I spend 6-9 weeks traveling MTNs. I have no complaints at present with My 3:42 and RCS69.
 
I still dont understand why anyone would want to tow heavy up a steep grade in a overdrive gear. On any transmission the strongest gear is the direct one. With the automatic trucks this is 4th gear. As 5th and 6th are OD gears. So far I am very happy with my 2013 3500 dually automatic with 3;42 gears. I have only 2500 towing miles in the Northwestern US, but the trans has handled its task just fine.

I will agree that direct is the strongest gear in a manual transmission. But I am not so sure in the autos. Since with an auto there is no counter shaft, the power is always straight through. However they do use planitary gear sets and maybe in direct they don't? The Ford 6spd auto don't even have a direct, 4th is 1. 15:1. With any truck and any transmission, how many miles are actually traveled in direct? So, I really don't think direct is such a big deal in the auto's. If I am wrong, someone feel free to educate me:D

There might have been some validity to that statement back in the days when overdrives were add-on afterthoughts to automatics (witness the 47RE which was basically a TorqueFlite 727 with overdrive and a lockup torque converter added). I'm not so sure that is the case with clean sheet of paper designs in which overdrives are an integral part of the transmission's design from day one.



My complaint with the 3. 42 gears is twofold:



1. The rear wheel torque from a standing start is greatly reduced as compared to a truck with 4. 10 gears.



2. I bought a 6 speed transmission for a reason, and I don't care to have 6th (and, to an extent, 5th) relegated as useless for towing applications. Might as well just have a 4 speed if that's all the gears that you can use.

You can do that but you WILL loose the 100K warranty and end up with 1 year on the axles.
 
It has been a long time, if ever, that I experienced a 3500 4x4 weighing around 8000 lb and getting almost 20 mpg at 75 mph through the alititude and mountains of NM and AZ! The new 3500 will do it.
 
I regularly get 18-20 HWY MPG ,My best 22. 5 65-75 MPH, Mixed City 14-16, I am Very,Very Happy with my 13s. 3211 on the OD 1/3+ Tank DEF, it looks like this truck is going to reach 5K on factory DEF fill and NO active regens. :D:D





I don't blow smoke up anyone rear, and I only state facts as truths.



Drive smart and the mileage will good to great.
 
How many miles till the good fuel mileage kicks in? Lol. But srsly, you guys are saying 20ish at 75 with a new 3500?
I babied mine on the 350 mile trip home and only got 13. Disappointing. Next week I'll be hitched up to 18k for several hundred miles, I'm hoping that loosens things up abit.

Edit: 21. 5 mpg on the Hemi during an 800 mile trip. Can't complain about that.

Hmmm, maybe those Ram engineers aren't blowing smoke either by promoting the 3. 42 axle ratio...

I was suspicious of the 3. 42 as you will read in the next TDR where I ran some calculations and it seemed the 4. 10 was ideal to keep rpm around 2000 or so in 6th at highway speeds. The Ram powertrain integration manager said the new engine likes 1200-2000 rpm and the 3. 42 ratio would work well. He was right.
 
I don't think so. I was talking to a guy at Carlisle today who has an '05 that makes 800 RWHP on diesel and 1200 with juice. It runs 10. 8 in the quarter mile with juice and on just fuel will outrun a ZO6 Corvette. The 4. 10 rear end is stock. The only weak link in his driveline is the overdrive compounder on the 48RE. If any of you are near Carlisle, it is worth the trip- particularly to see what's inside a 6. 0, 6. 4, or 6. 7 Ford engine. There are cutaways of all three to look at. You can also see a V6 Eco Boost in the flesh- the turbo's are something you'd expect to see on a small Kubota garden tractor.
 
RVTRKN, I don't see How 3:42 gearing is going to cause any harmful or unusual wear. its like changing oil every 3K (although on VVT motors I recommended 3 to 4k intervals) hard habits ,hard to break, Time will tell.
