After 234,987 miles, the alternator in my 97 2500/Cummins has started to show signs of givin it up with 12 volts of charge showing on the voltmeter. So I was in search of a 136 amp in my area and all I could find is the 120 amp alternators, not one 136 could be had unless I mail ordered it and would have it in 3-4 days. I need it now. So I ask, will the 120 amp that I got, which works
fine charging at about 14.7 volts, would there be any problems using the lower amprage alternator?

Should not be a problem unless you have a lot of extra electronic in the truck or you do a lot of extremly shot trip stop and starts. bgt

I would suggest getting the factory alternator rebuilt. Mine has been rebuilt twice and currently has over 500K miles on it.

Big amp stereo, gone. Big 2500 watt CB radio, gone. Compressor for big K5LA, mandatory! Live in south Florida, no intake heaters for the most part. It takes the low 50's for them to activate and it's not for
long.
I will get my old one rebuilt. I like the idea of 136 amps. After all, that's what it's supposed to have. Thanks for the replies.

It may be best to have a pro rebuild it. The shop that rebuilt mine said there's some moving part inside that's a royal PITA to disassemble and rebuild. It and the rebuilt starter have been working just fine for a year now. It's nice having the engine turn over smartly when I hit the key.

I was gonna put a new front bearing in one cause that was all that was wrong with it. Guess there was more to it than it was worth, so I got one from Napa with the 3 year warranty.

They're nothing like the old one wire Delco alternators, that's for sure
