Just dropped by the Dodge dealer to ask about required tune-up/maintenance, and the service guy showed me a print-out of the 24K maintenance schedule. Included on this were "valve adjustment," "injection pump adjustment," and "front bearing packing. " There were a dozen or more other simple items mentioned, but the cost for the service..... almost $1,000

I've read nothing about valve adjustments in my maintenance manual (CD) -- or for that matter injection pump adjustment or wheel bearing packing.

I don't remember where I heard, but it is my understanding that the valves automatically adjust and the bearings are 'sealed' and permanently lubed. I've not seen anything in the manual about adjusting the injection pump, either.

Is this stuff all on the level? If so, how hard is it to perform this stuff yourself? I've done all the other recommended maint. myself and am pretty handy with tools.

Any help/suggestions/links would be appreciated

I would go by what your owners manual recommends. I would not let this Dealership touch your truck. They are thiefs!!!! Valves don't need to be adjusted on a 24 valve truck until 150K miles. The wheel bearings are sealed on a 4x4 truck so that would also be a rip off. The Dodge dealers don't know how to do anything to the VP44, it is a Bosch pump and the only thing that can be done to them is to replace them. There is not even a repair facility in the USA that can work on the VP44. What ever you do, don't ever go back to that Dealer. I would call DC and report them if I were you.

WOW

DON'T DO IT - Unless things have changed the valves on the 24v's are due for adjustment at 100,000 (or was it 150,000), the pump is non-adjustable (I think it's only done with Software) and the front wheel bearings on a 4x4 are sealed for life.

This sounds more like a schedule for the older 12v's - 2 wheeler

I would not consider this to be absolutly the truth. A couple of mine were out of adjustment by 28,000 miles. I believe several other members found out the same thing wehn checking their valves... . under 100,000.

I do agree the above schedule sounds like a 12v schedule

I totally agree with BV that it sounds like the 12V schedule.

Just what I was gonna say.

I've read other guys talk about checking their 24V valves earlier, after break in and they've said what KatDiesel said...

I asked cummins about this and they said it's possible, and if you do check the earlier and find some out of adjustement it could be from break in after readjusted should be fine till the suggested time of 100K+

now you know why we call them "stealers". what a rip off.

IN your manual is a "recomended maintaince guide" There is a version A and B. Read which one you think your truck fits (one is short drives, extended High speed, always towing, the other is the way most of us drive). Follow it.

In my manual they even give you a place to fill out what you did to keep track.

Thats 28,000 miles, 1/4 of a mile at a time :D I'd be a little out of adjustment too :) The Cummins guy I talked with in KC at their open house said 150K no problem. I am sure there is alway the exception, but 25K is not the interval and 100K would be conservative. This Dealer is either a thief or stupid and I would take my business some where else.

My valves were off considerably at 90K miles, over half of them were OUT of spec by a large amount. I would adjust them at 30 and check them at 75K if I were to do it agian. I gained low end power and fuel economy by adjusting them.
