Just curios as who's exhaust brake is popular among the 24v crowd and why?
What do you use?
What do you like about it?
Has it limited your choice in exhaust systems or mods?

Thx

Max

Here's the problem I've run into figuring out which one to get...

- If you keep the stock turbo, or get the 14cm2 housing, any will be fine.

- If you intend to go to the 16cm2 housing, you need a 12v brake, since the 16cm2 housings, I'm told, use the same mating technique as the 12v.

- If you intend to go to an HX-40, you need a 4" exhaust brake because the HX-40's outlet is 4". That leaves you with the US Gear and (I think) BD makes a remote-mount 4" one too. Both of these are in the Kilobuck range or more.

So there I am stuck at #3. <sigh>

Mad Max I really don't know what is the best among the 24-valve, but the one that most preople have are BD, Pacbrake and Jacob's (Cummins). I use the BD exhaust brake (see signature) and I like it mostly for two things one is it has the most braking compression (holding back power) and the other is it works go down to lower RPM's than than other brakes. And it has not limited my exhaust in any way as I just have a 4" exhaust from the turbo back with the stock turbo.

I love my Jacobs ebrake, easy installation and I know I can always be able to get parts if something breaks 10 years down the road. I heard the others have more braking prssure, but I can't imagine needing more because to thing slows me down almost too quickly.
One of the nice features about having an ebrake is you can use it to warm up your truck faster in the morning. Unlike the other brands,I can(and have) leave the ebrake on while the truck sits idleing in a parking lot for 40+ minutes and my exhaust temps NEVER go any higher then 450deg(preturbo).

Thx...

The BD looks to be the beefiest... but I don't know if it ties into the ECM wiring the way the Jacobs and PacBrake Kits do.

I like the "intergration" of the exhaust brake into the trucks engine management... but I think those direct mounts limit what size pipe you can run?

RobG, is the ETH sporting the 12cm housing or a larger one? I forget...

Thx Guys...

I'm running the BD with Torque Lock and Pressure Lock. You need those with an automatic. Seems to integrate into the various controllers very smoothly.

I did all the installs myself and had no problems except for ignoring the installation of the magical resistor! I waited to see if I needed it and yep I did.

The BD setup seems to work quite well.

Hey Mike... . imagine this. . you have an exhaust brake mounted on an automatic equipped Ram, and can ONLY (really) use it in O/D or D. Now imagine this; use your exhaust brake in ONLY 6th or 5th gear (on your Ram) and you'll get the idea. That's why the BD exhaust brake is the best. . it has the highest retarding HP. . especially in the midrange (up through 2800 RPM), right where you need it... ESPECIALLY in an automatic Ram.

Take a look at the construction of all the brakes on the market; who has the best design, the highest opening and closing pressures (to virtually eliminate valve sticking), the highest retarding HP, and the highest quality of materials used? Choose wisely.

BTW Mike, I have left my BD exhaust brake on for about a half an hour, several times and have never had the temp go 1 degree over 450. . post turbo. I believe Andy experienced higher temps because he has a 12v. Sad but true, a 12v produces about 190 retarding HP whereas a 24v produces around 150 retarding HP (this information was taken directly off Dave Fritz's website. . about two years ago). I believe it was explained in a back issue of the TDR that it has to do with the differences in head designs.

The signature tells it all... if it's still there. . I like it!

I went with the Jacobs and am very happy. With Jake, you know they will be around when you need them. Plenty of breaking power for what I'm dragging around... see signature.

John:

Why is it that the brake only works for OD or 5th or 6th gear?

Are you saying that the others only kick in on high RPM's? #ad

In this industry I've tested and installed all of them. BD has the most retarding horsepower in the game, a difference you can feel unloaded and even more when pulling a trailer or carrying a load, as in a dump body.

I have the Jacobs E Brake. With it on, and gearing down as I approach a stop sign, if the roads are even slightly damp, I can skid the rear wheels. I can do this even with my 3 horse slantload trailer. Why would anyone need any more braking HP?
I say buy what ya want, but you could not pry this brake from my cold, dead fingers!
And it works in every gear, no microswitches to adjust, etc, etc. Plugs into the ECM, and activates at idle after 1 1/2 seconds or so, which even gives grandma enough time to shift!

John,I understand what you mean... . but I'm still having a hard time imagining me owning an automatic equipped Ram! #ad

Davison, an exhaust brake only works well in an automatic equipped Ram when the TCC is locked up, usually D or O/D. This would compare to exhaust braking results one could expect from a 6-speed transmission in either 5th or 6th gears (i. e. , direct. . 1:1 or overdrive). Since the automatic guy is at a distinct DISadvantage here, you need all the exhaust brake you can get!

I have the Jacobs E-brake and am quite satisfied- even when pulling the 11K fiver. Actually, I rarely ever make a stop without using the exhaust brake. It has become just a part of driving and would hate to be without it.
Like you I gave a lot of thought to which and looked at all of them. Decided on the Jacobs mostly because it was Cummins ralated.
Had the Pac brake on the last truck and it was good too.

I like my BD. Really made the difference running down 8 miles down 7% grade pulling my 15K pound fifth wheeler. Never touched the brakes either. Super for bringing the beast to a stop dropping thu the gears. Sounds just like an 18 wheeler. Hoowwaa!

Pac-Brake here. Love it! Easy install, great support. The hardest part was the wiring. I got it mainly for the price. I bought it way before wwcd2 started his shennanigans (sp?). So I missed out on those prices. Oh well.

I have a dealer installed PacBrake and it is great. I use it even around town, although I originally bought it for towing. The dealer put the switch under the dash where it was hard to reach, so I bought a shifter mount switch from BD... the only way to go!

I have been very pleased with the Pac brake units on both my trucks. But I have to say the brake on the ETH is MUCH more agressive!!
The support has been very good. Great company to do buisness with.
