floating the gears going down is easy on the 5600. . going up the gears it is not as easy. i did it for a while but then decided to retrain myself to not do that. clutch is cheaper than a trans rebuild.

I tend to rest my hand on the shifter in 2, 4, 5, and 6. I suppose I put a small load on the shifter, just from the weight of my hand and forearm.

Until this thread it never occurred to me that this could be a problem. A quick search suggested it has never come up in the entire history of TDR.

On edit:

Correction, it's been brought up twice. Both relating to G56.

G56 Popping out of gear.

G56 transmission noise.

My goodness, just how sensitive is the G56?

Let's think about this for a minute. I've attached a drawing of the 5-6 shift fork from the service manual. Now, this is admittedly not a great view, but it looks to me like the surface area which bears against the synchro assembly is quite large.

Assuming the transmission is well-lubricated, it appears to me you'd have to drive with a considerable load on the shifter handle for quite a few miles (2 million, perhaps?) before you wore that fork surface down sufficiently to allow the friction cones (shift dogs) to pop out of gear.

... at least on the NV5600.

Not the same trans setup, but I just rebuilt the AX15 5 speed in my daughters 98 Jeep Wrangler. She drives with a hand on the knob a lot. The 3,4, and 5 synchros were SHOT and the 3-4 shift fork was worn down about . 080-. 090" on both sides. It wouldn't stay in ANY of the top 3 gears without holding it. I would think just touching the knob would not be a problem but any pressure would be. I drive with my fore-arm on the folded down console and my finger tips resting on the knob almost perpendicular to the shaft with no pressure for or aft.

seen it a number of times... at the very least you'll wear shift fork pads. still gotta get inside the transmission

don't rest your hand on the shifter, that's what the center console is for

How many miles were on the AX-15? I find this interesting... I also have a 98 Wrangler as well... I have 175k on the factory AX-15 and I am still running the orginal factory clutch... I always have my hand on the shifter, and have never had any issues...

I also drive with my hand on the shifter on my NV-4500 in my 98 Dodge... 230k, and the transmission is still working perfectly.
