Ok, ?Here is an oil choice question for you guys. Its time to change the oil.
Things I understand: The factory uses synthetic GL-4

Dealer Oil: Recomended, but I feel like I am being robbed at $23. 00 per quart.

Amsoil 75-90 Series 2000: This is also synthetic, but is GL-5. It sounds like as long as I keep the trans oil temp below 240 deg. I will not have a problem with the additives plating on the syncros. How hot does a trans get?

Amsoil 80-90 AGT: This is also synthetic, and is GL-4. Why not use this?

I would like to hear why or why not use any of the above. I figure with the Amsoil, I can change it 5 times for the cost of one change of Dodge Fluid!

I have already seen the posts about "what you run", I am looking for reasons Why not to run The Amsoil 80-90 AGT.

Check out this post - https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum3/HTML/002829.html . Gene (MGM) had his transmission rebuilt last week and I was there to get my clutch installed. I was extremely impressed with the performance of the 75W90 series 2000 AMSOIL and will be putting it in my transmission ASAP.

Thanks steve, I did see that post.

I also see everybody who uses Amsoil seams to use the 75-90 2000. Why is it better then the 80-90 AGT. The 2000 has the ingredents that can "plate" on the syncros, even if it does take 240 deg, while the AGT does not. Seems the AGT would be the first choice?

TowPro... I have towed loads from over 80' total length to loads Grossing over 30K all the while I have monitered Trans oil temps. I have never seen 200 degrees. This is running Amsoil Series 2000 75W90. I have no idea how hot other oils run. I can not see a case with my truck that I could get the oil to 240.

BTW... . just like shifting down gets EGTs down it will drop Trans oil temps 30 - 50 degrees by running in 4th (direct) vs 5th Over.

TowPro, I ran the AmsOil Gl-4 first and it was only slightly better in the cold getting it into gear than the stock castrol. I switched to the Ser 2000 and what a pleasant change it goes into gear easily at any temp. Go for the Ser. 2000 75W/90

Tow-Pro,
Remember, the Series 2000 75w-90 is also
MT-1 rated. This addresses any soft metal issues. The 240 degree bit does not apply with this lube. I doubt you will ever see these temps anyway running this lube.

The series 2000 and 3000 oils are better than the older ones. As the price shows.
For the NV 4500, Amsoil recommends the Series 2000 75w-90. That means if you ever have an oil related break down, Amsoil Warranty covers it. I never asked about their 80w-90. It would probably run a little warmer.

Well it looks like I will go with the Amsoil 2000 in the NV-4500.

And with the money I save over the "Dodge Liquid Gold" I will treat myself to a case of Amsoil HD diesel/Marine for the Motor now that it sits most of the time).

And while I am at it, I will buy a case of the 5w30 3000 for the VW TDI diesel I now drive to work and back.

In fact I might as well start the wifes new Honda CR-V onto a diet of Amsoil as well.

May also try the stuff in my KTM, but I think the mower will be alright with just plain oil in it!

Best part the Amsiol warehouse is right down the street, No shipping charges!

Thanks everybody for the answers and thanks to Advanced Lubrication Techniques (see the banner on TDR) for there help!

Now your getting the hang of it. Been using Amsoil since 95 in all my cars and trucks(2000 Honda Accord,92 Honda civic,00 Dodge cummins of course. Have Son who uses it in his 99 and his wife has 2000 Montero Sport. My oil comes out of warehouse in Dallas so I have to pay shipping. Got it in my M6800 Kubota tractor too. It is worth the money.

I've been using the 80W-90 GL-4 Amsoil in my transmission for about a year now. The shifting is a bit firmer for the first few miles in the lower gears. It smooths out when things warm up a bit. I will probably try the series 2K next change. I refuse to buy into the Castrol "Liquid Gold" rip off from the dealer.
