I had owned a 2006 gmc sierra duramax crewcab 3500 dually 4x4 I would say at this time they are compadable though the Allison is a proven transmission since 2001 have to give this new transmission some time like the motor matt 2007. 5 3500 laramie dually qc leer cap tfp ss handles go rhino ss hitch step factory steps navigation

Thanks. Mine has several times down shifted around 55 which I think is more desirable but usually it has to slow to 45 or so to down shift to third. The inconsistent shifts bother me.

Well if your running 55-60 in towhaul and coming into a grade where you want the downshift ,dont wait for the trans to shift down automaticly. Hit the button once for 4th lockout and you got 3rd when you want it. Hit the button two more times quick and your back in towhaul 3rd gear. You gotta learn to drive it . When you do this you need the throttle on. With the 3. 73 gear you can run 80 in 3rd before you redline. So you could do this manuver at 75-80 and run up that grade on the fly HAHA. Once you learn the trick you'll love the 06-48re.

But it still doesnt surprise me that the 68re will funtion better yet.

Learn to drive it? I've been doing all that for years starting with a Torqueflite 727! What you are saying is what I have found in 33K of driving the 06, T/H is useless! My DTT shifts better AUTOMATICALLY without a controller than the 06. There isn't any trick to manually shifting an automatic. The first time I did that it was in a 63 Dodge with push buttons! This is the 21st century right?

I am saying the transmission doesn't do the same thing all the time. Today I was rolling into a rest stop in T/H mode braking normally and the *** down shifted at 55mph to drive. I tried the very same thing last week three times on the same ramp and it didn't shift down until 45mph just like it does all the time without braking.

The book says it is supposed to down shift in T/H mode when you are applying the brakes. It does this about 1% of the time above 45 mph in my experience and only when I am not expecting it.

The other thing is the transmission allowing the engine to lug at 1100rpm in T/H mode. I had the same problem towing with a 68rfe over the weekend. As I asked then, how hard is it to program a truck to down shift before lugging the engine in T/H mode in 2006 or 2007? I understand the transmission after market has figured it out. Why hasn't Dodge?

I won't ever "love" the 06 48re until whatever it is designed to do it does consistently!

Didnt mean to hurt your feelings, I'd say your 06 48re isnt working right. Take it to a dealer that can recognize this. ;);)

Sounds like you and I drive alike. I agree with driving by the seat of your pants. Feel the truck, the transmission and the engine. Pushing that little button for the manual transmission is great.

CUMMINZ

Well I'v never seen any automatic that would be in the RIGHT GEAR ALL THE TIME if your towing a load.

Maybe I misspoke myself when I stated you gotta LEARN to drive the trans. I should have just said , you got to drive the trans. It may be a automatic but there not going to do it right unless you take controle of the shifting at times. Not even the allison. I came out of detroit with a 5000 lb load at 30-40mph and that allison couldnt makeup its mind if it wanted to be in 2nd 3rd or 4th.

I am so use to driving in "OD off" its the first thing I do when i start the truck is hit the button to now in the new truck in tow haul. I cant stand driving around now in 5-6th gear around town it lugs to much for me. I hit around town to 4th at the most, these trucks are made for higher RPM not around 1100. Anything below 1700 bothers me and I start shifting...

Remember the allison when it first came out ? 5 speed and you couldnt lockout overdrive. Took them till 03 to put in the overdrive lockout.

And as most guys here know the 47re HAD overdrive lockout,as did the early 48re . Then our smart engineers put in towhaul and delieted the overdrive lockout for 05. How many unhappy buyers did that move make. I personally passed buying a 05 just because of that. I did buy a 06 when they put the overdrive lock out back in along with tow haul.

Now I understand the allison has a 6 speed WITH manual controle for every gear. I drove a GMC suburban Denali the other day. Has 6 speed auto. Dash indicater reads PR-N-DM This is not a allison its GM. D= 6 speeds all auto controled . Put it in M for manual and it activates a rocker switch on the shift lever. Push top or + of rocker for upshift , push bottom or - of rocker for downshift.

Traveling at 60 mph in D in 6th gear, pull shift lever into M push bottom of rocker and you got 5th, push it agein and you got 4th etc. Stop vehicle and restart and it will shift auto up to the limit you set. Got total control of the trans. manualy. This really works slick. It also has towhaul by pushing button on end of shift lever. I understand the allison has a similar setup, and I would hope our new 68re has also.

My point being that for towing on uneven roads you gotta drive the auto trans manualy if you want the right gear all the time. In the last 5 years the engineers have begun to recognize this , and are giveing us better manual controle of the auto.

The secret is eliminate gear hunting, keep it in the right gear for the given situation and keep the torque converter clutch locked up.

Its the torque converter clutch that gets hot ,burns and disintigrates and then junk floats through the trans that wrecks them.

You can add properly retarding the vehicle(trans braking) when slowing down or letting off the right pedal

You asked how it stacked up and I answered 10 times as high.

1&2nd gear are lower for better launches

reverse is much lower for better controlled backing up grades

5&6th overdrive lowers your top end rpms

being able to completely manual shift at will

torque converter is much tighter

better shifting more positive but not hard bumps

talks to computer in a good manner to control eBrake

smoother shifts

with 6 gears you keep the 6. 7L in its peak rpm better

I am missing one to make it 10

That better?

I don't have any towing experience yet with the 68RFE yet so I can't comment on the Tow/haul functions. The up/down switch on the end of the shift arm will manually let you select the highest gear the transmission will shift up to and will downshift manually as you push the down button. Select 4 before you start out and that's as high as it will shift... select 1 and it wont go past 1st. Each time you stop and restart the engine it defaults back to 6 and although I haven't confirmed this for sure it I believe it defaults back to 6 anytime Park or Reverse is selected.

After driving this engine/transmission combination I wouldn't go back to a 'manual shift' transmission but thats just my 2 cents. :-laf Everybody has their preference. :)

Right on keeler, after giveing the detailed discription of the GMC denali I drove a new Dodge cummins. I found it has the same basic setup. Vary nice, should make a great tow truck. :):)Oo.
