Competition Duramax twins

posted this on 2nd gen forum and got no answers ...

apparently they're too busy discussing tires, radios and window tint

axles to compare are 96 cab/chassis 3500 dana 80 and '01 srw drum braked 70

can anyone tell me the diameter of the pinions and diameter/spline count on the both axles ... (axle tube thickness of both would get you a barley pop at indy this summer)

would like to check locker/spool availability and don't want to depend on the salesmen for proper specs

Not 100% sure, but the numbers sticking in my head are 2" dia. pinion, 11. 25" ring gear with 1/2" bolts, 1. 5" 35-spline axles on our 80 hybrids, and 1. 62" 37-spline axles on the full 80's. 70's have the same size shafts as our hybrid 80's.

You can get some info off of

http://dodgeram.org/tech/specs/axle/rear_axle.html

I beilieve that the tube diameters are 4" for 80, 3. 5" for 70, and 3" for 60 but I don't have them in front of me to double check. The wall thickness of the 80 is around 5/16". The easiest way to check the wall thickness would be to unscrew the breather out of the axle tube and then you can see/measure the thickness. In most cases you are probably best to go with the 80 for a performance vehicle.

thanks guys, good info ...

GO4LO i was hoping to find out what my new 80 has in it ... i've heard that all dodges have the smaller 70 axles ...

just have to pull one i suppose

and the pinion nut looked huge in comparison to the 70 i took out

Can I ask where you picked the 80 up and what did it cost ya? I might be in the market for one myslef so just curious since I see your not all that far away from me.

Thanks,

Ted

look in the classified for the dana 80s for sale ad

he's located in greenville pa, has two wide duallys left and one cab/chassis

all are 3. 54, DRUMS and open ... don't think that'll help your truck though

these are new, never been in a truck ... he even has the dodge shipping container the axles arrive on ... pretty neat

and contrary to other posts on here the 96 cab/chassis is two inches narrower than my '01 srw drum braked 70 that i took out
