If you stand by the drivers door with the window down, truck running, there is a gap you can see through in the fender well. You should be able to see the input to the steering box, and the pitman arm. If you move the steering wheel does input to the steering box move? Does the pitman arm move? Do the tires move? This will tell you if you have any play in the steering column, steering box, front end etc.
I had to replace my idler arm and also pitman arm at about 120,000 miles. I then added the DSS and steering was much better. I have 180,000 on it now and it needs ball joints.
If you still have a ball joint on the frame side of the trackbar, get rid of it/ DSS trackbar with bracket eliminates this/ also check your ball joints/ there is unending info on this website/ there is no reason for you to suffer the joy of driving one of these great trucks/ good luck/w
Make sure you put in the correct box, 3 turns stop to stop. 4&1/4 turn box will wander and you will do things like trying to adjust it. If the box comes from Power Steering services NO adjustment will ever be necessary. Adjustment can not be PROPERLY made with the box in the truck and then only a tec. that has had the proper training. That adjustment has made the rebuilders a lot of money. Before power steering adjustment was for removing slop but now it is an over center adjustment that can not be done as I stated above. Good luck. Check the turns before installing just to make sure.
I just slapped a Borgeson shaft on last night and it made a huge improvement. My slop was mainly the connection to the input shaft of the steering gear. I could grab the shaft and with just a little wiggle, feel all the slop.
That about wraps up all the steering components that could be replaced. Finally done!
