Ongoing no start dilemma

Block heater watts?

Its always something , driving my 97 12v w/92k down the road when all lights come on. truck loses power and stalls lock up converter so i pull over pull over restart truck , starts rite up ,but no lock up converter, tach, not charging, no a/c. all fuses checked all good . any ideas ? thanks to all

well just replaced the crank sensor, and that was not the problem ,still no tach, lock up converter, a/c , and not charging, could it be the TPS sensor ?

No, ESS, PCM, and wiring is all there is to it. You could have tested the ESS before replacing it. Have you checked the wiring and connectors?

yes checked all wires, i used a match book cover so as not to let it ride on the damper. the first time it did it the truck bucked, tach went 0, dash lights came on like the key was shut off for 2 seconds then was fine drove 120 miles did it again thit it stalled, but re started with the ,tach, charging, torque converter not locking, and no a/c help this my plow truck and need the truck ....thanks for what ever help

Is there ANY work that’s been done recently?
fan belt 3 months ago but all worked till this problem. the truck sits a lot, month at a time, when in the garage its always on a battery tender. belt breaking could cause lots of damage from belt shredding but it all looks fine for a 97 with 92,000 miles I've had the truck 6yrs

I've always set mine to .050 inch per the FSM. I've read of some who use a credit card. A matchbook cover might be too close. I agree with Scott, it sounds like there could have been some damage to the wire harness. I would give a good look at the bend at the top of the engine and also the ground bolt for corrosion.

This is very frustrating ,checked all wiring under hood all seems well, tightened all grounds rechecked all fuses , unplugged three big wire plugs at the computer behind the air cleaner on the firewall, and it still runs ??? i used a feeler gauge and set crank pos sensor @ .050 ,there is 3 wires from the harness that plug into cps center wire was hot, end one hot but dim, other side nothing, all tested with test light grounded on battery - negative, took it for a ride and notice that the speedometer, i did not notice it when this all started, tach, a/c ,and tps, nothing working do you think its the computer? help.....and thanks

I know to you this may be nit picking, but it’s not a Crankshaft Position Sensor, it’s an Engine Speed Sensor (ESS). This is the description of it, what it does, and how it does it.

In my opinion, the belt shredding and the symptoms you have now have got to be tied together. If the ESS is good and all the wiring and connectors are good, it’s possible that something damaged the PCM electrically, but I can’t see how that would happen without visible damage from the belt. It’s just too coincidental to me.

Up date the part that i replaced at carquest the part said crank sensor part #csc1542 this part is what rockauto saying both are the same as ESS . i gapped the new one .050 nothing. still no tach,no speedometer,no converter lock up, a/c and the only lights that work are oil,air bag, no wait lite for wait to start water in fuel, all not working. like i said you can un plug the 3 plugs from the pcm and it does nothing. Scott in the 1st description that you sent said ess along with veh speed sensor is used with TPS inputs w/transmission shifts into o/d ? again 2 years ago during the winter the tps was not letting it shift into O/D, spray it with wd40 and i worked till now. don't think that has any thing to do it with this too much stuff ain't working this is really got me stumped, really thought dss was it........walt

You very well may have had a PCM failure. It does happen. Either a '96 or '97 PCM from an automatic truck will work. Do you know anyone who might let you try theirs?

There is a member on the Cummins forum with the screen name of jimduchek who has posted a lot of PCM failure analysis. You might try reading some of his posts.
