I'm hoping that I can get some suggestions and recommendations on my 99'.

I've decided to give my 99' CTD and 06' Prowler 5er to my eldest son. My concern is that the truck has never been used for towing and has spent at least 250M of it's total 262M miles on the So. Cal freeways commuting to and from work. I've crawled under the engine and I can't find a 53 anywhere so maybe that issue is resolved. I doubt that towing a 9000-lb vehicle on a original trans. would be a good idea and the IP is also original. I don't have a problem with replacing the trans, VP, and whatever else might be suggested, I'm just not real sure where I should start to make this truck reliable and enjoyable for my son and his young family. Any ideas, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If there is nothing wrong or seems to be wrong I would not worry to much. If you wanted to I would start by replacing the lift pump with a fass or airdog just for reliability and change all the filters and everything before you give it to him. I would just tell him that you will replace the ip or trans when it starts to go. Most times you will have some kind of warning before these things go out. not all the time just sometimes.

Hey Navy, thanks for the reply. The thing I'm concerned about is, that my son and his family don't get stranded a long way from home with a dropped trans. or dead IP. I've always maintained the truck and do most of my own wrenching, but my kid is not very mechanically inclined so I'm just trying to eliminate the major issues before handing him the truck and 5th. BTW, USNA 71'.

Thanks

WEll I think if that is the case then go ahead and replace the trans lift and ip and you should be good to go! thanks for servin.

agreed. be thankfull it has gone that long!:-laf also install a fuel pressure light/ gauge so if they get a bad filter or batch of fuel they'll know before taking out the IP. ;) dont forget the KDP!!!

Just updated the truck profile... it's been a while. I'm going to order a IP from Bluechip next week, but I'm at a loss on who to go to for the trans. The Dowel Pin; I totally for got about that. Guess that would be best addressed when the new pump is installed??

thats when I did it. made sense to me. :)

The trans is easy. Call DTT & you'll get a great dependable transmission. I've got 100k on miine & I pull a #8500 5vr & have had zero issues FWIW...

For LP I went with the Glacier fuel system, again trouble-free going on 2 years.

IP... I bought mine from Rip at Source Automotive. Great vendor to buy all sorts of stuff from. Guages can also be had at Source Automotive.

Good luck! I wish my dad would have set me up like your doing!

I totally agree with the going to DTT or maybe Goerend for the trans. Both have good reviews, but then, who is the best choice to do the installation? I don't want to go to some "Turn & Burn," shop that doesn't have the first clue about diesels'. Thanks for the suggestions everyone... Gotta' love the TDR.

I've had DTT for over 3 years and no problems. If your son isn't planning on any bombs the std DTT RV rebuild, without any expensive billet shafts etc. should do him fine for many miles/years. Gauges are a must if he's towing, EGT/Boost (combo), LP-fuel PSI and Trans temp. All three can go no an "A" pillar gauge pod, and the Westach gauges are a great value for the buck. Some folks don't like the looks of the Westachs but IMHO I think they look very close to the stock dash gauges.

You mentioned "my son is not very mechanically inclined", when you change the filters, oil & etc. have him do the work as you talk him through it. He'll get a sense of importance, pleasure and respect for what it's going to take to keep the truck going for another 200k or so.

DTT can do ALL of the work you've indicated. Trans, guages, IP, etc. They sell the RASP mechanical pump & I believe they do the FASS fuel system too. Call Bill at DTT & you'll be taken care of. All of the things your talking about do add up though... . Blow the dust off of that Visa because it's gonna be expensive!

I know... I'm guessing that I'll end up putting about $14K in the truck but it should be darn near new when it's finished. I've also decided to have the truck painted. The original is still in good shape but oxidizes easily; probably from sitting at LAX for days on end. I've already got the gauges and fuel delivery covered; just took me a while to update the 99' profile. So... does this seem about right??

O. K... point taken, but can't think of a better place to spend it than on the kids.
