2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission ABS and Brake light and Spedo

[turbo torque]

Both brake light and ABS lights stay on and the speedometer is intermintent.

From what I read I think its the speed sensor, VSS in the rear end. I pulled the plug on it and checked with an ohm meter, looking for about 1800 ohms and it was zero. Where will I find the best price for one? And if anybody has a part# that would be appreciated.

There are several recalls about the abs and brake light being illuminated due to a wiring malfunction in the harness. It doesnt say anything about the speedo though.

Mine did the same thing and it was the speedo sensor that was the cause.

Wires

Follow the wires leading away from the rear end speed sensor as well. I found mine had a chafe in them along the frame rail after I replaced the sensor (for the second time). Fixed the wiring, and put some split loom around it, been doing great since.

More than checking the electrical of the sensor, you may need to pull it and clean off any metal chaff that has gotten glommed onto it - this has been known to cause strange intermittent action. And yes, the vss does send a feed to all the devices you describe as being squirrelly.

My local Car Quest had it for the same price as rock auto.



Note, sensor for a '98. 5 is different from a '99
