Did You Know Ram had a Diesel Engine 11 Years Prior to Cummins (89)?

Nope. Not flaming! Hey I just had to swallow some mopar pride when I took grandma car shopping. We looked at a Kia Soul. I WOULD NOT buy a Ford car or car based SUV, but I gotta say their large vehicles are ok nowadays. Still the tech of the eco boost goes against something I would own.


All you need to do is come on over, take mine for a spin, and watch the smile on your face as you realize that the rocket you just set off under you is a 213 cid V6 and a 5000+# truck. I still can't quit grinning with that thing.
 
I love my turbo Buick but am scared to death of EcoBoost long term cost of ownership.

I shall live vicariously through you for another year or 5. :))


I'm sure I am naive, but i think that there are much greater chance of issues with things like the Nav screen and other electronics than dealing with engine issues.

BD, tell me more about the 235,000 mile Tahoe Hybrid! How did the trans/ motor/ gen and the High voltage system hold up?
It was a good vehicle for us. Bought it used with 102k miles in 2011 to replace our 03 suburban. Previous owner had installed LTZ wheels and deleted the hybrid grapics and decals...it was a sharp looking car. I replaced the hybrid battery at 155k and the cam and lifters around 185k. No other major repairs. Upper ball joints and front wheel bearings every 100k. Oil cunsumption was excessive (my opinion). I followed the oil life system and changed the oil when it got down to 15-20%, but it could take as much as two quarts to keep it full between changes depending on driving conditions. I blame the oil consumption for causing me to have to replace the cats at 220k...it started throwing catalyst efficiency codes along with the occasional O2 sensor code. I sold it because I felt like the “big one” was on the way where it would cost more to fix than it was worth and it was getting quirky and I was tired of fixing odds and ends such as door lock actuators, heater hose quick connections, drl and headlamp pig tails, oil psi sender, etc. We will certainly miss having reserved parking at the airport though.

That’s why I went against my own general advise and extended the bumper to bumper warranty out to 6yrs/125k miles. Honestly, I’m sure the parts aren’t cheap, but the engine has all kinds of room around it and looks like it would be simple to work on.
 
You have no idea how hard I looked at the Titan XD before I came home with this F150.
I owned a 2001 Found on Road Dead.. literally after it blew out a spark plug with 32000 miles on it. Ford said not their problem.. years following each time I seen a Flunked 150 I asked the owner if they still had lost any OEM plugs over 50% said they too had one spit out and Ford said tough luck. Nissan only issue is the radio static on FM stations I have tried to overcome since I bought the truck new in 2017.. Now Nissan has thrown in the towel on that. After several attempts at fixing it.

I cured that problem on my Frontier- Crutchfield sent me a Kenwood with installation kit for a little over $100 that fixed what ailed the Nissan unit!
 
For you all at least remotely interested in the Ecoboost platform and their capabilities, take a look at this video.

I'm not implying that I would be interested in something like this, but it reminds me so much of 20 years ago when we were spending so much time on the track with our Cummins trucks.

 
That is pretty impressive. But you know how it goes with this tech, it’s all relative. I still think I’d rather have the Coyote. It’s not how fast you go, it’s how you go fast. It must sound great with a set of pipes.

There's a fresh Ford TSB for the 2018 and newer Coyote. They are replacing a run of engines due to excessive oil consumption.
 
That's almost comical that more than a quart in 3K miles is excessive. I had two 6.9 diesels that used a quart every 400 miles, sometimes more, and I had to fight Ford tooth and nail to get anything out of them.
 
I’m still sticking with flying with style and form. If I’m not a V8 gas guy, I’m a I6 Diesel guy. Love the sound of both and in their right element. Im just waiting for the suitcases to rot out on the ‘14 so I can order something nice- like a Borla kit. Even now it’s good to hear it tooling through the neighborhood with the glass open.
 
Keep in mind that the 5.0L Coyote was completely redesigned for 2018.
One of my hunting buddies got a 5.0 in his F150 and at 12k miles it developed a rattle. Ford said “it’s normal” and during a trip to Montana for cat hunting he found out it was abnormal. Then he did the unthinkable.......bought a GM with a 6.2.

What was the issue with his 5.0L? I've read a couple of threads over on a Ford forum discussing noise issues related to the high pressure pump on those engines.
