I bought a new 2015 SLT in Oregon when my California 2003 cummins (yes, the engine itself) bit the dust. The Oregon dealer did use my zip in California to figure everything, and they sent the extra money they collected for sales tax and title to my local DMV. The problem I had is when I got back to California with the new truck, I took it to my local dealer to fix a mirror that did not fold-away as it should. They flashed and/or unhooked the battery. California requires a vehicle that is bought in another state to be both smogged and registered within 20 days, so I went to get is smogged and then found out that the monitor tests that must run on the truck were not complete. Long story short, it took me several weeks and an extension with the DMV to get the monitors to run. If I had purchased the truck in California (which was not an option considering that I was stuck in Oregon with my 5th wheel), I would not have had to worry about Smog or personally registering the vehicle. My advice is only that if you buy it out of state, you do not need to worry about whether it meets emmissions, as they are 50 state now (unlike my 2003), but drive it home and don't unhook the battery or allow any flashes before you go smog it. (Unless, of course, you are one of the few who lives in a county that has no smog requirements.) Have any dealership warrantee work done after smogging! Sorry, I'm off of the rebate issue, but I am responding to other posts about purchasing out of California for California registered vehicles. Just been there and done that.
