The battery in my 2000 Dodge Dakota is going over 10 years old. I got it on another one of those Schumacher on board battery tenders. Stays plugged in all the time.

The battery in that is a Duralast Gold battery.

Shows that battery tenders really do work.

Or, you may have a quality battery. Not knocking battery tenders, there's definitely a time a place for them.

I purchased an Optima AGM battery from G.I. Joe's in February of 2006 for my 26 hp John Deere diesel tractor. I did this because my tractor is frequently operated on steep terrain. Lead acid batteries always leaked and the acid was beginning to eat away the battery support framework.

I am still using the Optima battery today. It has logged over 2,200 hours of operation and has never failed to start the engine - even at 10°F (I have many 10° mornings where I live). The battery has never been on any kind of charger - just the alternator on the tractor.

Of course, the charging system on the tractor doesn't have a sophisticated charging system with a temperature sensor - it is charged at the same voltage whether it is 10° or 100°. So, after over 17 years, why is this battery lasting so long? I will probably never know, but now I am curious to see just how long it will last.

I have in my maintenance book to change the battery’s at about 4 years. I have a battery tester. . It tells the story on battery’s as they grow old before they fail and leave you stranded . Yes I also think jump starting vechicles is bad with all the electronics on board. The battery in my wife’s 2022 with 22 k is starting to show it’s ready for a change. Went to Costco interstate battery at a good price. Sitting on my workbench. Lexus wanted to do a diagnostic check and sell her a high dollar AGM battery. Car sits out side. Gets a lot of short trips and auto start. My wife hates a cold car to go the the grocery store. It really needs a trickle charger but would be a pain in the winter outside..I think the answer is to test them and change them more often and keep them on good trickle charger when not in use is the answer
