air compressor-vertical or horizontal

The wife bought me a vertical or standing air compressor for Christmas. Sears sent home a horizontal compressor. The horizontal unit has a 33gal capacity versus 30gal for the vertical unit. Is there any other differences? Is one better than the other? Any other tips?

Its not likely you are going to stack anything on top of the compressor, I would go with vertical as it takes up less square footage. Unless you are going to haul it around in the back of a truck without strapping it down , then the horizontal may be better.

They should be the same. The only difference is the tank itself.



If you are going to be in the same room as the compressor I would build a work bench over it. Then box the compressor in under it. Make sure to provide air flow to the compressor for cooling. A small fan set to blow air over it will work. By having the compressor boxed in and hidden the noise will be at a livable level.

I was just about to purchase a vertical belt drive twin cyl compressor when my dad got me one for my birthday two years ago. Its an oilless horizontal. Its the absolute loudest thing in the neighborhood. Much louder than my diesel dodge!! I didn't have the heart to take it back. I plan on getting one later and then giving it back to dad. He'd like that. I'll just tell him I needed a bigger one.



Get a decent sized belt driven unit that goes putt-putt-putt instead of the oilless ones that go BRRRRRRRRRRRRR!! Much easier on the ears in the garage in my opinion.

In the past when I've borrowed a compressor I left it outside and closed the garage door. The insulated garage door reduced the noise to a dull roar. We're planning on an eventual storage shed. I can see where moving the compressor to the storage shed would be a good thing.

I got a 2 stage belt drive vertical mounted in the basement. Air intake is in the garage as the air there is more dry. power switch in the garage. No garage space taken up with air compressor. Can hear the compressor come on in the house but it doesn't bother me... ... ... . I'm in the garage!

parcher - What kind of pipe did you use for that setup?

Pvc for the air intake, it's just a remote mount for the filter. Black iron for the pressurized air. Compressor is bolted to the floor.

parcher, thanks for response. Did you use mounting pads for compressor feet? I got 3 bulletproof industrial strength mounting pads from Grainger - only gripe is they were pricey - about 20 bucks apiece.

Scrap oak from the pallet the compressor came on. If oak is good enough to mount truck bodies, it should be fine for my compressor.

I have the oilless horizontal, 6 hp-30 gallon. Hate the noise. If(when) it gets replaced, I will buy a vertical 2 stage with a minimum of 60 gallon tank. My cousin bought a huge old cast iron unit . When questioned why, he said nobody can borrow it. Then he wants to use mine to blow out his sprinklers on his rentals! You have to love family. DK.
