the headaches of summer towing

Hi guys
I know why the air dam is there but how important is it to have one while towing?
Thanks

I don't think they do anything at all!! I have all mine in the garage. Some may claim they help with milage or they direct more air into the grill but with a 7500lbs truck whats a little piece of plastic going to help!!! #ad

Theory is, one PROPERLY applied will direct air movement in a way that will benefit a vehicle in one manner or another - the FACT that ALL professional race cars use them pretty well proves their usefullnes IF they are installed correctly.

In the case of my '91 Dodge/Cummins (see pointer in sig below), I installed an aftermarket air dam below the bumper of my truck intended to increase frontal air pressure thru the radiator, while at the same time, provide a low-pressure area BEHIND the air dam to additionally promote air flow thru the radiator area. No way of knowing or proving the effectiveness of my use of the air dam - but I did manage to keep my coolent temperature within usable ranges in the older, poorly designed cooling system on my truck until I finally upgraded to a later and larger radiator.

the air dam doesent matter for most 4x4's, It 's a ground effects kinda thing #ad
but for a 4x4 it might help let you know if you're running over something potentially to tall #ad
#ad
on us 2x's the front end is lower and the aero feature can be a plus #ad
Besides gary I ain't seen one on those racing peterbuilts #ad

i agree with gary concerning the "low pressure area" behind the air dam... can't remember where i found the info though... tom
