I do not understand why 'modifying' the cross member is necessary if others (like the poster above) have proven that you can remove all the bolts with simple tools.[/QUOTE
There are as many levels to mechanical skills as there are trucks
 
Wonder if replacing the bolts with ARP studs would be a better way to go? ARP studs have a rounded top of the stud to help start the threaded nut on super easy. ARP has super strong, top quality hardware which should prove to be helpful. Just a thought.



That would make it harder to remove and replace the pan.
 
The reason I'm doing it is convenience. I want to be able to drop the pan easily, clean the pan out, change the filter, put on the new gasket and reinstall the pan without dropping the crossmember. That way I can do it any time I want. No crossmember lowering needed, no jack needed to support the transmission while the crossmember is lowered. Transmission service can be done other ways, but for me I can modify the crossmember, it doesn't reduce the reliability or structural integrity of the truck in any way, and it makes it more convenient for me!

Access and feel to start the bolts is the issue. Aluminum transmission blind holes and steel bolts always present some risk of a cross threaded bolt. When installing the pan bolts feel is important on that first thread in aluminum. Insufficient access leads to cross threaded bolts. Every truck is different, some seem to have room. Some have very tight clearance.
