I was going to get a new one too with Max care running out, but now I got the new engine, I should get another 77,000 miles out of it....

Sounds like you shouldn't have done only partial fluid changes. :p:p:D

Mechanic said he can't find anything he did to cause this. Parts all look great shown. Pan was full of aluminum along with filter. This afternoon he is tearing the front apart. The converter got VERY HOTTTTTTT, look at the discoloring of the metal.

Well, the aluminum had to come from somewhere, and I suspect it plugged the cooler. Those transmissions don't just fail out of the blue, and it still leans toward something he did when he pulled the rear housing off. The overrunning clutch and B2 holding clutch are back there. Also there is a thrust washer/bearing that can drop down when the output shaft is removed. It is difficult to assemble in the truck, much easier if the transmission is stood on end. If the thrust bearing dropped and he didn't check the end play again when he put the tail shaft on it would chew things up pretty quickly.

I am no expert but it sure didn’t fail for no reason. As I mentioned he put it together and separated a few times to get it to where it felt ok.

Thanks for chiming in on this.

Would you be comfortable with a reman or should I insist on new since this is clearly a result of the multiple assemblies.

It was a bit of a jarring clunk and then no throttle response it just gave what it wanted to. Interesting my temp never went over 250 at the sensor at the valve body from what I was told is it's location.

There is also a sensor in the torque converter. I have seen it as high as 260° when the dash sensor shows 195°. That’s only towing at 10-15 mph up steep dirt roads. Dropping to 1st will keep the same dash temp but drop the tq converter to 210°. The ECM will increase fan rpm from too high of fluid temp at either sensor.

I’d be curious what your tq converter outlet temps were.

Mechanic said NO sensor in torque converter, only in valve body.

Stan I showed the Mechanic what you said, he agreed 100%, He said in the future if splitting the case it will be on a bench with the tail up.

He said number 8 thrust bearing was bad. He said the last time he put it together he tested it on the hoist and all seemed ok. Took for a test drive and all ok.

Warranty people want to know what I tow and if I performed the 60k service. I showed them my book with all my services. Also have a Geno's receipt for an AISIN gasket but can't find where I bought the filter as they were out of stock. Noted Mopar on my list.

Sure hope I don't get any flack about this AS "I" sure didn't cause this!

The trans that was in Portland is now gone and next closest is New Jersey, GRRRRRRR. Tomorrow will be the day it either get's resolved or all goes to SCHITLZ.

Hopefully it all goes well tomorrow. One thing all these years in helicopter maintenance has taught me is that there are very few coincidences and if you go back and look at the last maintenance you can often find what happened to cause an issue. Not always, but more often than not.

As far as the tq converter sensor I’ve never seen it (like nearly everything in my Aisin) but there is enough data that confirms it’s existence. The ECM has fan operational data based on it, which wouldn’t happen if the value was calculated (like oil temp). There is also a live OBDII data feed with the tq converter temp, which also doesn’t happen with calculated temps.

Thanks!

Something else the connection with the round plastic retainers holding the lines to the trans one got so hot it melted.

The engine rear main seal looks great so no need to change.
