Well, the aluminum had to come from somewhere, and I suspect it plugged the cooler. Those transmissions don't just fail out of the blue, and it still leans toward something he did when he pulled the rear housing off. The overrunning clutch and B2 holding clutch are back there. Also there is a thrust washer/bearing that can drop down when the output shaft is removed. It is difficult to assemble in the truck, much easier if the transmission is stood on end. If the thrust bearing dropped and he didn't check the end play again when he put the tail shaft on it would chew things up pretty quickly.
