Interesting swap

6BT Value

My trans finally went. the billet input shaft broke and needs rebuild. So I am thinking on upgrading to a 6 speed auto.

I did some searching and it seems like the allison might be the best choice here...

I know there alot to do to get this done over rebuilding the 47re. I just dont like the pv cable and maybe it braking the shaft again.

I do run this as a dd and down at the track... So basically I am looking to make sure I run the right trans this time. I do not want trans problems... .

Not even sure which one is better for racing and holding up... .

What does everyone think... ?

thanks Joe

I was under the impression that the 68RFE needs a PCM to control it. Plus the PCM does a lot of torque management with the engine to keep things from breaking. It might not work in a racing application. I assume there's a bunch of horsepower involved.

I'm afraid your thoughts of replacing your 47RE with an Allison or Aisin are only wishful thinking unless you have access to engineers capable of programming PCMs and thousands of dollars.

The modern six speed automatics are computer controlled and must be integrated with engine controls. I don't think anyone makes the necessary PCM/ECMs to adapt it to your earlier engine.

I been searching this. Did not think this would be so complicated. I guess they wanted to make it alot to do this.

right now I am searching the 48 fre to see what can be done there also.

I always said when this trans goes I would like a 6 speed. I just dont want to be in the same place as I am now. also looking to see if I can get mpg everyday if I change things... .

There are several well known 47/48RE builders known and recommended by TDR members. Your current transmission can be built to endure anything you can do to it but be prepared to spend some big bucks.

I was told still many times about this trans. The only thing they haven't fixed is the input shaft problem. In the 47 the input and intermediate shaft are the biggest problem. Even with a billet shaft I broke it. I don't want to go through the shaft breaking again. this is the main reason for getting better options while I can and with the trans apart..... trying to go with a better trans with better options.

Maybe I am stuck with this thing... .

If anyone wants to talk transmissions please feel free to give me a call... 717 629 7237

I didn't realize you are already breaking a 47RE.

Six speed automatics like the Allison 1000, Aisin, or Ram 68RFE are not any tougher than a built 47/48RE, maybe not even as tough, they just offer the convenience and driveability of more forward gears and better ratios.

You may want to have a phone conversation with Dave Goerend He does both the Mopar 48RE and the Allison's, I have a 48RE and he did a great job on it.
