Amsoilman: What Diesel Fuel Additive should be used in the 99 Dodge Ram, Cummins? Also I understand that the diesel pump manufacturer has Stanadye formulate the pump additive for the diesel pump. Is Amsoil above Stanadyne specs like they are on everything else?

Eino,
Amsoil does make two different Diesel fuel additives. I use the "Concentrate". It comes in a 16 oz. can and will treat 100 gallons, so I usually add 1/4 can each fill.

Have used it since day one, and now have over 100 K miles.

Wayne,

I was told not to use the Amsoil concentrate if my 99 diesel has a catalytic converter. My dealer says it does. So should I use the diesel modifier instead? Also my fuel supplier (Pacific Pride) uses Shaeffer diesel fuel additive at the pump. So now I feel like I would be wasting my money if I add any other additive?

Eino, Your 1999 Cummins ISB doesn't have a catalytic convertor. Go to The official Cummins web page and you'll see for yourself. If you look under your truck you'll see a small thing in front of your muffler, but it's a resonator---not a cat. Sam

Eino,
A couple of years back, there was a chemical in the Amsoil "Concentrate" that was considered bad for catalitic converters, so it was advised not to use it in a Diesel if it had a cat.

The chemical used in the "concentrate" has now been removed, and it CAN be used in Diesel engines that have a cat.

Diesel "Modifier" does not treat as many gallons, and is recommended primaraly for automotive applications(cars)

Thanks Wayne,
I've used the diesel concentrate mixed with the cetane booster 50-50 in a small Ford Diesel Tractor for 5 years and it flat out cuts the smoke. Now I know I can use it in my 99 Ram, however Pacific Pride uses Shaeffer in their storage tanks so would I be wasting my money to use the Amsoil Concentrate? I was thinking of using it anyway but just using less. What do you think? Thank ypu!

Eino,
If pacific Pride indeed puts in the Shaeffer additive, you would most likely be going overboard.

I know however, here in Utah, we have several oil refineries, and I have been through a couple of them(benefit of being a School bus driver)on tours. The ones I did go through did say they put in an additive during the colder months, but each used a different product, and one could not tell me the name of it. Makes me wonder?

I do use the "Concentrate" year round in my 94 Ram. Just want the feeling of satisfaction knowing I am using what I consider the best.

I am also an Amsoil user and dealer and swear by the stuff I don't use it as much as the amsoilman and I don't have as many miles on my truck as he does, I have 47k. I use the concentrate also year round, not as much in the warmer months but pretty religously in the colder months.

amsoilman, how often should I use the Cetane boost additive. I live in S. Georgia, so I am really not as worried about cold weather as you guys up north are. My major reasoning behind using the treatment is lubricity to the fuel pump and power. I ordered a can of the stuff from a dealer who is a friend, so I could evaluate the performance. I put the stuff in last night and I would swear the truck ran better this morning, but that could just be perception. Thanks for any info

John,

Amsoilman might disagree with my thoughts. . But other than dealing with a really foul smelling additive... I didn't see any benefit to the Cetane boost. To me its a waste of money. I do however like the Modifier.

Course, if he does disagree, I'd like to hear why. . I'm always open for suggestions.
