Swepco Gear Oil

I wanted to know if the Frantz TP filter could take the place of the Amsoil Dual Bypass spin on filter, not running them parallel. And the reason I ask is because my oil is black and everyone responding to the Frantz filter sayes it cleans the oil back to the way it looked when it was poured out of the bottle.

AH, I see...

But sorry, as shown in the photos in this thread, the Frantz uses a replaceable TP cartridge for a filter element, while the Amsoil is a spin-on throw-away type...

And yes, the Frantz usually WILL clear the oil after a cartridge change - and after all, isn't CLEAN oil the REASON we install these filters? ;) :D

sure would be nice if there was a way to return the oil into the plastic vent vapor/separator thing on the front of the timming cover, instead of the oil fillcap

If it wasn't so great a hassle, drilling the timing cover and installing the return fitting would be a neat touch, a good return point that added the benefit of a steady stream of oil directly on the front gear train...

Frantz

Seems to me, somewhere on the TDR, someone said there is an auxiliary turbo drain very close to the existing one and they were using IT to drain their bypass filter. It showed the tubing that he used to hook it up to the block. Seems like his filter was called "Spinner" or something to that effect.

I can picture it in my mind, such as it is, but can't remember much else about it. BTW. . Out in my garage is a Frantz filter that I picked up at a swap meet 20-25 years ago for $1. 00. I've seen how good they work and one of these days I will stick it on my 98. 5... .

Just got through reading this and am interested in both the frantz and the motor guard... ..... especially since some have had sealing problems with the frantz. I have a motor guard air filter on my plasma cutter and the seal is very robust... ... . even subjected to 135 psi of air, so I don't believe that the motor guard would ever have leak problems. I realize the frantz leak problems are probably from faulty sealing rings/o-rings/whatever, just looks like less chance of the motor guard leaking.

One thing I would like to throw out is how different engine oils are supposed to run cleaner... ..... and how the majority believe that if they are using oil brand X and their oil stays cleaner than with oil brand Z that oil brand X is better. Please note that I am not referring to by-pass filters at all with this portion of my post. Anyway, it has always been my impression that the dirtier running oil brand is doing its job better by keeping contaminants in suspension... ... whereas the "cleaner" looking brand is allowing more stuff to settle out in the pan and/or deposits build up. Carbon on the rings, sludge in the pan, etc. Anybody want to comment on this? I'm no expert and don't claim that I am correct with my understanding... ..... I just want someone with a better understanding to clarify this for me. Thanks.

Nice to bring up a good old thread too!

3rd Gen Frantz

Did anyone install the Frantz on a 3rd gen motor?

I have one on my '03. I made a bracket out of 3" wide by 1/8" thick steel that slides underneath the passenger side battery and the filter mount bolts to it.

Ordered the amsoil swivel fitting and got a oil fill cap from Napa for the return, used the plugged port on the top of the full flow filter for the supply.

Looks like what I have.

I used a non vented oil cap from Autozone, with a 90* fitting to an air hose fitting. On the return hose from the Franz I used an air fitting quick disconnect. 50k miles no leaks. The only thing I would suggest if you go this way is don't connect or disconnect while engine is running. heheheheh

oil line

i was wondering where to put the incomming oil line on the ctd. and where to exit the oil line to the ctd. other than that ,i have used the franz on many gas engines ,and like the clean oil on the dip sticks.

See post # 5 for a picture of where to connect the bypass filter to.

You can return it to to oil filler cap. You can get a new cap from Napa and modify it to put a return fitting in it.

Steved, I'm trying to get in contact with the tdr member that did the original group buy.

Is anyone interested in another group buy?????

Dave

Ok, Right now I'm just going to gather who is interested in the second group buy, so far only me and dwillmoth.

If there is enough interest then I will go through the formal TDR process.

Might sound like a stupid question, but does anyone sell a kit that includes the hoses/fitting/filter etc?

Contact

www.wefilterit.com

Ask for Deb Harley, and the discount she has given other TDR members in the past - tell her Gary from Canyon City Oregon sent you - it might help. Or, maybe wait to see if the latest group buy discussed above comes to pass...

Gary,

Does the kit from wefilterit come with everything less the return swivel?

IE all the correct treaded fittings and plumbing pieces?

Thanks
