Another Tire & Rim Question

Over the years I have tried many different tires on my trucks..... Most tires have had pros and cons. I have yet to try the Pro Comp tires, and i am very interested in the Pro Comp Xtreme All Terrain Radial Tires.



Does anyone have any feedback they can share?



Right now I am running Goodyear Silent Armor P285/70R17 tires. They are a very good tire, however, I am dissapointed in the mileage I got out of them... . 25,000 and they are shot! I alo need to upgrade to a load range "E" tire, and the Goodyears are only "D" range. My truck is stock in height (See signature for details on my truck). So here are two more questions.



1. ) The Pro Comps are P305/65R17 in size... . Can I run these with stock height? The OD on the Goodyear is 32. 8" and the OD on the Pro Comps is 32. 6", so I know I'm good there. However, the width on the Pro Comps is 12" and the Goodyeras are 11. 5" Will the extra 1/2" be a clearance issue?



2. ) What is the width of our factory rims?

I'm still running the factory Michelins during the better weather months and switch to the ProComp Extreme A/T's in the size you're considering during the winter as I cross the pass into eastern Washington about once a week on average. The ProComps do a good job in rain, not too bad in mud or snow either - but the additional width can be felt without question. I can really tell the difference when I switch back to the stock tires as the steering and rolling resistance is obviously less. MPG difference is negligible due mostly to the change in seasonal fuel mixtures, but lower RPMs with the larger ProComps is offset by the added unsprung weight and rolling resistance.



I seem to get pretty decent wear with tires and the Pro Comps seem to be wearing well, not quite like the iron-clad Michelins, but nothing to complain about. Of course alignment, rotation, load, and road surface conditions play a huge part in wear too. My days of burying the throttle and destroying tires left when I sold my last pistol grip Challenger! (ya, I know - should've kept the car)



Like a lot of members here have stated I too would like to see a taller E-rated 265 width tire offered to supplement the rather dismal selections we have to choose from currently. That little bit of additional width is more than noticeable, particularly in the soup-like snow & slush we mostly get here in the Pacific NW. As to the clearance question, my Lorenz kit lifted the front end a couple inches so a direct comparison isn't possible. I did mount the Pro Comp 305's on another set of factory rims so I wouldn't have the backspacing issue to deal with and the factory wheels are plenty stout.



Would I buy the Pro Comp Extreme A/T's again? I don't have anything to complain about the Pro Comps they've done what they were designed to do with no surprises, but only if they were offered in a taller and skinnier size. There's a reason the loggers run tall skinnies in the mountains, and the concern for appearance takes a distant back seat to safety. I believe the ProComps are built by Cooper.

P rated tires are "P"assenger car tires. . so I seriously hope thats not what you are running.

Toyo makes a 285/70/17 Load Range E tire with a 50K warranty.

I have the 305/65/17 Pro Comp XAT's on 17x8 wheels and stock ride height. I havent had any issues wtih rubbing or body contact. They work good in the mud and we don't get enough snow to even mention that. So far I have logged 20,000 miles on my set and still have over half of the tread remaining. They make a little whine on the pavement but not enough to be annoying.

factory rims are 7. 5"

Alloy wheels, chrome clad steel, and chrome clad aluminum are 17x8.



The "ST" model trucks run 17x7. 5 .
