I'm not a blacksmith, but for several years now I've been having a love affair with anvils. I guess I just love big pieces of iron.

So I was wondering if any of you guys has an anvil, or photos of cool ones, or links to cool anvil foundries. Post 'em if you got 'em!

This morning I discovered Rat Hole Forge. I'm lusting after their 460 pounder.

I currently own a 110 lb Harbor Freight special (made in Russia). I love the thing, but 110 lb just isn't big enough. ;)

so beating the snot out of a piece of metal on a cheap 25lbs vice doesn't really count as a anvil eh. . ? most of the time at work, i just drag the metal down to the lower level and use the rails in the floor as an anvil. or go down to the metal working area and beat on the work table there [30"x60"x6" solid slab of steel with dog holes in it]

That's a nice anvil indeed!

If you want to see some interesting old iron, check out the thread I posted in the "other" forum about an advert I found in a 1900 issue of a blacksmith's magazine (titled "An Air Blast from the Past"). It is for a hand-cranked Roots forge blower - the original Roots of "Roots style" supercharger fame. Before they were huffing life into dragsters, the Roots blowers were being hand-cranked to keep the forge fire going.

Yikes! In todays age, I cannot imagine how much it costs to ship 110 lbs. of solid steel from Russia to America!

A 450+ pound anvil?!? I am guessing that where you put it is where it stays!:-laf

how about a 560 lb anvil? Its offered by Centaur forge ,made by Vauhn. and some smelting!

My Grandpa had a couple anvils in his garage when he sold his house a month or so back. My Uncle threw them in the dumpster before I could get them!!! I did get my Grandpa's tools though, he was a diesel mechanic and machinist from WWII till the early 80's... . He has some nice tools, I just wish I could have got an anvil or two:(

I hate hearing things like that! People think so much old stuff is "junk". What a shame.

That 560 pounder is nice!

A good quality new anvil is about $8/lb last time i was in the market.

I have yet to bolt down my 167lb anvil and it moves around on the pecan log pretty easy. I dread trying to run screws into that log.

I don't have a picture of it but I have the anvil that my grandpa used as a blacksmith in Kassel Germany. When he emigrated to this country around 1920 he brought it with him. When my grandpa retired, my uncle bought it and when he retired, I bought it. I would like to keep it in the family. When I use it, I never fail to think of some of the things he might of made / repaired on it so many years ago! It is just an anvil, nothing special but has great sentimental value to me.
