2500 towing question

Backing a dually

i am in a real pickle here, i am 2500+ over gvw with my cummins 2500 4x4. (i need 4x4). i need a full size crew cab, my sons are just to big for the back seat,i keep getting kneed in the back with the seat as far forward as i can stand to drive. i am afraid of an accident and losing my house and retirement to a lawyer. i don't like being forced to look at ford or chevy. i love my truck, spent a lot of cash on it already to make it mine. ken

Ken,

Take a look at the new quad cabs. I have one (I drove the Ford's and Chevy's before I bought my Dodge). They are bigger than your old quab cab (I know it's bigger than my '97). While it's not as big as a full crew cab, I have been able to get along fine.

I am 6'-3", my wife is 5'10". We have three boys (the oldest is 5'4") the other two are still in car seats. We just put over 1200 miles on it over a four day weekend and did fine.

As other's have already mentioned, the shorter cab gives a much tighter turning radius (something like 5½ feet) over the Ford. That's a LB QC Dodge vs. a LB CC Ford.

Anyway, I would say try it for as long a test drive as possible. I did, and I made my choice.

As for your original question, I wouldn't expect to see a full crew cab from Dodge for a couple of years at best.

Best of luck in your search.

Diff between Dodge, Ford Chevy

The biggest difference in comfort in the three trucks is if you are over 6 1/2 ft tall in the back seat ( The Ford/Chevy are bigger in the back) or if you want to carry three adults in the back seat.

IMHO, you can carry 4 adults under 6 1/2 tall in the Dodge no problem.

I used myself as the judge in my wife's 03: I set the driver's seat where I am comfortable (I'm 5' 11") and then sat in the back seat behind it. I was more than confortable.

Good Luck, Wiredawg

i am 6'3 long legged. with the drivers seat back all the way tilted to be comfortable only a child can be back there. ken

I need to adjust my theory...

Ken:

I guess I need to adjust my theory:D Whatcha think, maybe four 6 footers in QC Dodge?

Could very well be a tall family could have to choose between Ford or Chevy.

Thanks, Wiredawg

Kluther,

Do you drive your truck like a fifty cent video? I am 6'1" and have the seat no where near that far back (it is a 3rd gen, and a manual, so I have to be comfortable with the clutch pedal). You might try getting the family in a 3rd generation quad cab. With the drivers seat in its normal position for me, I can hop in back and sit comfortably with a little room in front of my knees, of if I slouch down in the seat a bit, my knees will kiss the back of the drivers seat. For my wife and I it has worked out great, but if you son is as tall as you, better look at a ferd crew cab, or go to a truck shop and lay down a pile of money to have your frame and cab stretched, there are a few guys out there with custom s-u-p-e-r cabs….

Take it easy,

Peter

Yea, I was surprised at the rear seat space. If I adjust my drivers sear forward a little, I can sit fine in the rear. Both seats comfortable for the long drive. 6'3" 230lb.

Can't comment on fifty cent, I quit following him when he was just 2 bits.

i myself am 275 lbs,6-3 and as stated above most of my height is from the waist down, i sit as far forward as i can and after 2 hours of driving the front muscle of my shin is killing me. my boys are catching up quick. my ten year old has already past up mom. ken

My block is well represented by the big three. My next door neighbor Jerry just bought a new 2500 crew cab Chevy with a Duramax, I have my Dodge, and two doors down Mark has a 2004 Ford F250 super cab with the Power stroke.

Anyway, I don’t think you would be any better off with the Chevy crew cab than the Dodge Quad cab. I sat in the back of the Chevy, it did not seem to have any more room than the Dodge, the only difference was that the back seats were very short, and a little more reclined than the Dodge. In fact the seats were so short I don’t think the headrests would do me a bit of good in an accident, my head would just smack the back glass. Having the seats reclined a bit more was nice though. The other weird thing about the Chevy was how the back door is set up; it just felt very awkward to me to get in and out of the back seat. The way the opening is you have to climb in towards the front seats, then sit back, it is difficult to describe, you can’t just slide in.

The Ford super cab is tiny, but their Crew cab is roomy. The wife and I spent a lot of time in a Ford Crew cab at the San Diego auto show. The back seat is very roomy, there is nothing else like it made by any of the other manufactures. For us, the cab was a downside, because it was so huge that the pickup ended up being limousine length, which is not an option where we live and drive. But if interior room is what you need, it may be your best option……. but it is a Ferd…. . unless you can wait some unknown amount of time to see if Dodge really will come out with a real crew cab……. .

Really,

Take the family, and go invade a dealership and pile into a quad cab Dodge, you may just like it. With how big you are, you will probably have to have you oldest sit behind your wife, or in the middle, but at least give the 3rd generation quad cab a try.

They say its a done deal and will be here soon.

FWIW, the 3rd gen QC does have way more room than the 2nd gen. It's not even close. I did some comparisons before buying my supervisor a new '04. 5 and the results were that we all agreed that the 3rd gen QC was sufficiently large for 4 guys on a long trip. My crews height varies from 5'8" to 6'1". The Ford crew cab would be necessary to haul 5 or 6 adults on a regular basis. Since I really had no faith in the 6. 0 PSD, I chose to buy another Dodge.

Dave

I too looked at the 2003 and 04 Dodge Quad Cab having been bugged by the local dealer to trade my 2000. After taking a rule to both, I found that the seat in the rear of the new QC is 1. 5"

wider towards the front seat and there is 1. 5" more leg room.

A total of 3" of horizontal length in the back seat bigger than my 2000. All that presmissed on my seating position in the new truck compared to mine. Did not check the verticle height. Need the horizontal room.

Needless to say, it was not worth trading for 3" more inches of room with only 1. 5 more inches of leg room.
