The TDR had a write up on one about 6 years ago that had 1. 1 million miles. Very interesting story. They used it with teams of drivers to pull 5th wheels from the manufacturers to the dealers all over the country. Bill

I've met two million mile Dodge/Cummins owners who transport RVs. One had a 96 that was totaled by a drunk shortly after he hit the mark. The other was driving a 97. Both were pure stock. Only 443k on mine so I have a long way to go.

I'm only at a quarter million, 251,245 to be exact. Doesn't smoke an ounce of blue though and runs like a top. Ever since the timing was bumped it starts right away without throttle even cold, maybe 1 second of cranking. It started before without giving pedal but it took longer like 3 seconds of cranking.

I've been getting the TDR magazine since 1999 and I think there's a total of 4 Dodge Cummins featured with 950,000 miles and above. All but one was still on the original unrebuilt engine.

The highest mileage I've known of personally was a 1991 with a whopping 1,240,000 miles on the clock. I heard about this truck so found out who owned it, a guy named Marty Byrd in Indiana, and I called him up. He told me all about it (used it to transport travel trailers). It was on the original motor and he'd never had the head off the motor. It was still running good although it was using some oil (only a quart every 2000 miles). He changed it every 10,000 miles (about once a month). He replaced most the fuel system at 600,000 (injectors, pump) and was on with 4th or 5th transmission. The greatest weakness was the front suspension, he had to rebuild it like 5 times.

Even at those miles he was still trekking cross-country with it regularly.

I talked to him about 10 months later and he'd sold the truck. He'd put another 20-30k on it (so it was around 1,270,000) when he let it go. A wrecking yard wanted it for the motor, but a farmer in Kentucky bought the truck for around $4500 to pull his horse trailer. Marty had kept the truck up and it was still looking pretty good.

Last time I talked to them they thought the farmer was still driving the truck but they hadn't kept in touch with him. So I don't know what ever became of it. They said Cummins was very interested in the truck but they didn't really offer Marty much $$ to buy it.

I first heard about this truck on the Happy Campers website when it hit 1,000,000 miles, so I posted about it on the Diesel-Stop website in 1999 (scroll down a ways) http://www.thedieselstop.com/archiv...82&page=19&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1.htm

approaching 800,000

The clock reads 762,550 today, but it reads about 3% slow so I guess it's over 800,000. replaced the gaskets due to oil leaks, head gasket replaced as a precaution because of seepage around the thermostat area. work performed by J & H in Redding. when the head was off still had original hone marks in the bore, did not need a valve job so put the head back on. still have the original injectors. stormy

That is complete BS. Do the math, thats over 400,000 miles in a truck thats not even 2 years old. Even taking in account 2 years (730 days) he would have to drive 550 miles per day every single day. If you take it for 5 days a week for 2 years thats 800 miles per day.

.....

RVPILOT:Hey Stormy. . it was nice to meet you at the J&H Rally this past weekend. . i was the youngest of the 3 fellows that asked you to open your hood to look at the engine. Keep on Chuggin! Oo. :D

One of the million milers was from a dealer in my area. Bernards Northtown, in New Richmond ,Wisconsin. I think he was on his 2nd truck and keeping the old one for a spare.

That truck could've been built in '03. If it was built in Sept '03, 490 miles a day would put you around 15k/mth. I could do that pretty easy. I've driven over 40k miles since the first of the year, and haven't run every day. Over 10k miles in Jan alone. Not impossible for a workaholic. 500 miles/day isn't that hard for me to do. Besides, if there are 2 drivers, very easy to do. 1k miles/day wouldn't be that hard.

miles

1,000 per day for a team is normal and expected on the big trucks by many companies I've done it more than a few times a few years back. RC

I agree. I had a conversation on the CB with a transporter in WY a couple years ago. He had a 14 day old Ram with 11,000 miles on the clock. I asked him how he kept his log book legal. He just laughed. He was pulling a 36 ft Montana at the time and had passed me. I was doing 70 and was empty.
