Hello,

I am a fairly new owner of a 2002 5. 9L Dodge Cummins 2500 4wd Automatic (4 gear) trans. The truck is fully stock and only has about 130000 mi on it. The lift pump and VP pump were said to have been replaced 50000 mi before I bought the truck and the trans was rebuilt right before I bought it and only has about 2000 miles on it. Lately I have been having problems with the pedal feeling "dead" sometimes when I first start and take off in the truck (like the first five min. of running) and then it all of a sudden kicks in and off I go. I also have the same problem at about 55-65 mph when rpms are low in overdrive. I have to really mash the pedal for it to down shift and accelerate. From what I've researched these sound like symptoms of a bad APPS sensor but the only trouble codes I'm getting from turning the key are not related to the APPS that I can tell. Codes are P1693 and P1694. I will have it read with a ODB II soon to see if any others pop up. I'm concerned it may also be the VP-44 but I have no means of checking fuel pressure. What can I do about all this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm also a subscriber to TDR and this is my first post... hope it pays off.

Thanks,

Lance

Sounds APPS from your info. Call Scott at GENOS for replacement and tech support. NUMDER 1 rule for 2nd Gen 24V is FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE. 1,000,000 mi. on 24V 2nd gen. 1998 sold, 02 still going at 642,000. GOOD LUCK

Sorry, I'm going to disagree. I replaced about six or seven APPS modules in my old '01 Ram, one approximately every 45,000 miles. The first one failed at about 65,000 miles, after that one would fail like clockwork around 45k. Never figured out why. The truck always ran great. I put 325k miles on it and it belongs to my daughter now and has around 350k on it.

The symptoms mine produced were always the same: the engine suddenly dropped to idle speed and ignored my foot on the accelerator pedal or the cruise control set point. Sometimes if I "exercised" the APPS by rapidly pressing the pedal to the floor and releasing it, ten or twenty times or more in rapid succession, it would work again long enough to drive a few more miles then the cycle would repeat. It never set a code and the APPS always fixed the problem. I never experienced a failed VP-44.

I did not mean to imply that could be the only problem. Code 1693 indicates a fault generated in ECM. Code 1694 is no CCD/J1850 messages recieved from powertrain control module-Aisin transmission. The most common indication of failure would be the dead pedal when moving or on a restart. Another indicator would cruise would be intermitent. I would turn off ing. for 10 to 20 sec. to reset ecm and limp in using this method. I have had APPS last from 35,000 to 250,000 with normal life of 50 to 75k. To clarify my exp. I have been a member of TDR since 1998 when I purchased a new 24V 3500 which had 380,000mi when I sold it in 2002 and got 2002 3500 which I still have with 642,000mi. I will not buy another truck but a 02. I used the trucks to transport boats up to 45ft. long and 11ft. beam, so they worked hard. I just got my first computer for my 68th BD and is why I am a late arrival to THE FORUM. By the way both trucks were modified, the 02 to 560HP 980lbs. GOOD LUCK

Thanks man. I received some bad news today from my mechanic which happens to be a family member. My truck popped the infamous P0216 when scanned... it's the VP-44. Sucks... And maybe both the apps and the pump are done?

I have found a good deal on a BOSCH-rebuilt vp-44 with a air dog 100 (to help prevent this from happening again) for $1450. 00 delivered to my door (Diesel performance accessories for Dodge Cummins, Ford Powerstroke, Chevy Duramax. ) The pump has a 1 yr unlimited mi warranty. Sounds like a good deal?

What would you guys recommend for an affordable fuel pressure gauge as well?

What would you recommend as I move forward with performance upgrades to get a bit more power? I really have no need to exceed more than 300-400 hp. Just a bit of a bump without burnin up the transmission.

'02 2500 w/ 130,000 Rebuilt Auto Trans... pretty much stock besides leveling kit and cold air intake.

Call Scott at GENO`S. I am using Auto Meter but installed Pricol on buddys 02 same basic deal. The Pricol is less money. also ask Scott about Billet fuel filter top it makes the job simpler and is worth the price. By the FASS 95 and 150 have LIFETIME WARRANTY. GOOD LUCK

Depending on who or how your transmission was rebuilt, RV-275 injectors OR an Edge EZ is about all you can do if the transmission was rebuilt back to OEM specs.
