The auto transmission in the dodge trucks has not changed since mid year 98 when they added a check ball in the valve body, I have been doing a lot of shift kits, torque converters
and rebuilds (high mileage) this year.
We have put alot of power to this transmission without failure, when set up properly.
I do believe that the trans can handle upwards of 750 lbs torque.
On the other hand the stock converter will melt down for sure with anything above 600 lbs torque.
I treat them as two seperate parts, like a five speed and a clutch.
We address the weak points, then the whole package becomes very durable, even in abusive driving.
Factory ratings are there for the most abusive situations.
If using a little comon sense while driving you can get away with alot.
If you are going to do any power mods on an automatic equipped truck, I suggest you, at the very minimum, install a TFOD Diesel shift kit, and for real durable combo go with an aftermarket converter.
I hope this helps
