Many questions are being asked about what the BD PressureLoc is doing to the transmission and if it is good or bad for the TCC, here is the basic operating theory for you to decide...

A BD PressureLoc increases convertor lock-up clutch applied pressure on 1994 to 2001 Dodge trucks by 30% at light throttle pressure. The kit can easily be installed on the stock transmission and assists in preventing convertor shuddering and transmission slippage.

Torque convertor clutch slippage results in high heat and eventual transmission failure! The higher the HP, the lower the transmission line pressure is, because line pressure is controlled by the position of the throttle pedal. The diesel has so much torque at light throttle pedal movement and thus low clutch apply pressure when the engine is at its peak torque!

You can notice a shuddering torque convertor under throttle at low speeds, and ALSO under heavy throttle with high power engines.

The kit's function is to increase the transmission line pressure ONLY when the lock-up clutch is engaged. The PressureLoc cylinder rotates the transmission’s throttle valve shaft to simulate 3/4-throttle travel to increase the line pressure to 90% of what the valve body design can attain at wide open throttle. (NOTE: The resulting pressure must be measured and set when the kits are installed. )

The PressureLoc is primarily designed for stock or mildly enhanced engine applications and owners who have installed an exhaust brake and want some extra protection. It is NOT a replacement for a modified valve body!

High horsepower and heavy-loaded applications should also be equipped with a BD Valve Body with larger porting for pressures up to 180 psi.

The PressureLoc increases the clutch applied pressure to 90% of what the valve body is capable of achieving at full throttle when you are only at ¼ to ¾ throttle travel. This kit addresses the need for more clutch holding pressure.

This pressure increase remains within the valve body design. The stock valve body has 4. 0 GPM flow when the torque convertor is locked up with the PressureLoc engaged. Without the PressureLoc engaged, this pressure will be 4. 0 GPM or less, depending on throttle pressure.

Our testing has shown that a stock transmission front drive clutch will slip at 280 lbs of torque with the accelerator pedal at ½ throttle position, which is in the range of 75 psi of pressure, and at 410 ft lbs when the pressure is 100 psi. The torque convertor clutch will slip at 565 ft lbs with 75 psi. With a PressureLoc engaged the pressure is increased to around the 100-psi mark.

What did we learn! Increasing the amount of pressure will assist in reducing the tendency for the clutches to slip.

Are you experiencing clutch slippage? If so you are applying more torque than the clutches are designed to handle.

Thanks for the description of the pressureloc. I also have the BD brake and autoloc. How does the autoloc work with the pressureloc?

I have noticed that the RPMs drops to idle when I am in OD and coasting to a stop form say 50 mph with the e brake off. When I turn off the OD and decelerate in the same way, I see the RPM drop some then continues to drop as I slow down, again with the e brake off. I assume that is normal for my BD installed components. Does it make any difference if I have the OD on or off with or without the e brake on?

Thanks for your information.

red1ton, what you are describing is OEM deceleration with OD on and OD off. Because of the gearing in OD the engine RPM will already be low so when slowing to stop the engine has only a short way to get to idle.

With OD off, you should be in 3rd gear, so the engine RPM will be somewhat higher and hence the engine has longer to go to get to idle.

With the exhaust brake off, everything is stock normal, with the exhaust brake on, you will get quicker deceleration.

The PressureLoc only functions once the TCC is locked up and is just along for the ride if there is no lock-up signal.

The AutoLoc functions once the TCC is locked up and MAINTAINS the lock-up by holding the lock-up signal ON until the truck gets down to the set speed and then shuts off.

Thanks for your excellent questions, keep em coming... Vic

TDCanuk:

Thanks for the great explanation of
the "BD Pressure Loc. "

I wanted to let you know that the
"BD Pressure Loc" "took care" of
a "shudder" I developed after
major modifications to my 96'Dodge
at the recent "Scheid Diesel Rally"
in Indiana.

They installed 370 injectors, a
governor spring kit, AFC spring
kit and also re-set the pump timing.
Prior to this I had them install
a new TC, BD Valve Body, heavier
band struts, reinforced transmission lines
and a "Mag Hy-Tec" Transmission Pan.

AFTER the pump mods and install of the
370 injectors I took the truck for a
test drive. After the transmission
shifted into 4th gear(OD) I would
reach 55MPH and the "shudder" would
start, but then go away as you
accelerated. I took the truck back
to Scheid and Dan Scheid determined
I needed the Pressure Loc to stop
this. I should have put it on the
truck when I had them re-do my trans-
mission. My fault!

Anyway, after the install of the
Pressure Loc NO MORE SHUDDER!
The transmission has worked very
well and shifts real smooth even
when I tow my heavy trailers up
the 4-5% grades in the Smoky
Mountains of the Mid-Atlantic.

Thanks again to you, Piers and
everyone at BD!
