And it’s not the windshield. It’s the side glass and mirrors that really matter as even bad wipers do something.

I also applied rain-x there, but the flat OE glass was almost better without wipers that first night. It was horrid, but the wipers seemed to be fine after rain-x was applied.

Not to beat a rain-x dead horse, but this thread came to mind several times last week while I was on vacation in Hawaii.

We flew into Kona Friday afternoon and by the time we got on the road to the Hilo, wet, side it was nearly dark. As we crested the summit of saddle road it started to mist/rain/fog. The rental was a ‘22 Jeep JL with 20K miles and likely the OE wiper blades and just water in the washer fluid tank. If it was raining or we were within 1/2 mile of anyone ahead of us it was bad, really bad. The mist/rain was just a schmear of water like I would get living in western Washington. Luckily it was only 20-30 minutes of wet road and precip.

The next morning my first stop was for rain-x washer fluid and rain-x water repellant. I ran the water out of the washer fluid tank, topped it off with rain-x fluid, and applied the rain-x to the windshield. We spent 4 more days in the rain/mist/precip in both the dark and daylight, conditions that were worse than the first night. Even on the 2 year old blades the visibility was so much better. The wipers need to be used a fraction as much and when they are used the windshield clears instantly with one wipe for both mist and rain without leaving any of the blinding light refractions that are present on a bare windshield. When there is decent airflow over the windshield, even the flat Jeep ones, the wipers rarely need to be used after dark.

Just cant say enough good things about properly applied rain-x and its safety enhancement.
We were in Maui last week. Our vehicle was a Jeep Cherokee Limited. Rain was sporadic but heavy at times. The vehicle had some worn out screecher/skippers that were OK. We drove the road to Hana were it dumped and the screechers actually worked better when raining. The road to Haleakala was another test of driving skills. We went up early so there was minimal traffic. It was raining up there pretty heavily on and off and 41*F at the top. Not much to see as the fog was ever present. I absolutely hate pushing the button to cancel out the stall/start EPA mandated bs and the electric brake. I could hear the mechanism working back there and imagined how much it would cost to repair it. When I replace our Honda Pilot someday I have to find another without the electric brake and the stall/start EPA required madness.
PS. I've never seen more rental Jeeps in my life especially since there is minimal places you can use one.

Yeah of rental Jeeps on the Big Island too. We did a few miles of lava roads, less than normal this trip, but I absolutely love selec-speed on the JL’s. Haven’t gotten to use it yet on the wife’s JT.

Played on 2 and 3 wheels a couple times. Can’t wait to get the wife’s JT-R out and play with an even more capable stock rig.

The Big Island has heaps of open space. Hopefully ,they don't use GPS and pop you. We've been there twice. Lots of volcanic rock. My friend lives there and there is a reason for it being called The Rock. He regularly uses a bow and arrow and shoots feral pigs and does the burial and leaf cook technique. Kauai's real pretty too. We lucked out and no idiot trying to open the emergency hatch.

Never had an issue with taking the rentals on the lava roads, but we also haven’t damaged anything.

We’ve been to Kauai once and ended this trip with 36 hours on Oahu to see Pearl Harbor and other sites. The Big Island is still our favorite.
