Blow-by bottle - revisited...

For those of you that have relocated the blow-by bottle, I have some questions: Where did you locate the bottle and how did you attach it? Is it working out? What is the inside diameter of the existing hose?

I'm getting pretty tired of oily film all over everything. Also not a big fan of the smell after changing the oil.

I looked at relocation options and decided to go the 'no maintainance' route. I removed the bottle and inserted an approximately 18 inch piece of 1/2 inch pvc pipe through the bottle clamp and into the hose. Added a hose clamp to the hose, tightened the bottle clamp onto the pipe and wrapped a wire tie around the pipe and the sway bar where they intersected. The bottom end of the pipe is cut at a 45 and positioned to provide draft at road speed.

Yep, it drips. So did the bottle. No smell or oily mess on the undercarriage so far.

I put the bottle on the transfer case skid plate. Used 3/4 heater hose and worm clamp. Works great nothing in bottle yet,no smells. Make sure you route the hose as high as possible at the front of the engine to aid oil drainback. Now that I know this works I am going to make the front piece out of conduit,should drain back the best.

My truck only has 600 miles and I don't see a film nor smell anything out of the ordinary. Am I just lucky or should I expect this to start stinkin' up the place soon?

Has anyone thought of closing the system?

Walker Airsep also has a similar setup only without the filter. I've been thinking about something like this because I do a lot of off-roading and some how have found myself in the river more than once. It seems like closing this system up would help reduce the chance of getting water/dirt into the crankcase. (though it is about 3 bills)

Any comments?

Zman, I used heater hose as well, I don't know the ID, but outside diameter was 1". I removed the bottle from where it is attached near the timing cover and used a piece of 3/4" tubing to connect the heater hose to the original tube (left it in place). Ran the hose alongside the oil pan and back to a spot on the frame where I installed the bottle on the frame. I reused the original tie-wrap holder and used a small hole in the inward side of the frame to mount it (approx under driver's feet). Smell is reduced considerably, and it will eliminate the fine coat of oily residue on the fan & shroud. Hopefully won't make much of a mess underneath the truck now. It doesn't emanate much vapor at idle anyway.

I wasted my money on that POS blow-by bottle kit. At least I don't have the stinking smell lingering after changing oil (also due in part to changing to Amsoil 15W-40 HD Diesel and Marine synthetic). #ad

Well, I put the fix to it last night and I sure hope it works.

I made my own "bottle" out of threaded pvc pieces/parts to replace the one with the holes. I then cut into the straight section of the factory rubber hose and inserted a "T". Next I ran about 8' of hose down the driver's side of the engine to the inside frame rail - making sure that it was on a downhill slope the whole run. The hose runs off the frame and onto the back of the transmission/tcase skid plate where it ends. I'm hoping that most of the oil will run down into the new bottle with pressure being relieved via the new hose that "T's" into the existing hose.

I changed the oil two days ago with Rotella T and it really stinks. Haven't had a chance to drive it since the fix, but I'm heading out for a 600 mile trip tonight. Hopefully no stink and no oil mess. I'll let you guys know how well it works when I get back.

Total cost of the project was about $25.

Well, I found a slight flaw in my design. I noticed that the oil pressure was running on the high side after making the mods to the blow-by setup. The "T" that I used appeared to be somewhat restrictive. I replace it with a "T" with a larger ID and it seemed to solve the problem. I put on about 900 miles with no smell or drips. Looks like the problem is solved. #ad

When new mine was like yours... but after the first oil change mine smelled for first 200 miles then the smell was gone. Also when I was adjusting the cockeyed steering wheel I noticed a light film of oil in the area of the blow by bottle. Guess I'll have to move it one of these days.

I have 4000 miles now.

I also got tired of the mess at the BB bottle. I have put a section of home AC filter in the bottle, to condense/collect the fumes before they get out of the bottle, and keep the mess in the bottle. I also added duct tape over the bottle hole facing the fan. This seems to have eliminated the mess. Still have the oil smell (Valvoline) for a short while after every oil change. By the way, changed my first fuel filter last weekend. Very simple job, if you happen to have a 1 3/16 inch socket (which I did).

I used a windex spray bottle. the smaller one. I cut off the threaded part and gave it a 1/8" gap all around. I noticed that it never leaked till I hit 20+ boost. then it just blew out the bottle and stunk up the truck. We need a better fix than this!
