I am not a mechanic...

You don't "disable injectors individually" on a 12V Harvey. The man stated that the coolant level was low. He also stated that he trusts the mechanic he's using. If he or his father brought it to me and told me what they've told him, I would have pulled the injectors for testing, run a compression check, and then pulled the head. This tech may have done those things, we don't know. If they are still concerned about the knock and wanted me to go further, I would inspect the bottom end.

I can't stand people that jump to the conclusion that EVERYBODY is out to rip them off.

Now, T, where is the "tick" coming from? Which side? Top or bottom?

That's not entirely true, either as I recall.

You can crack the fuel lines open one by one at idle to see if the knock diminishes when the injector is not supplying fuel.

It is a diagnostic aid that works on many mechanical engines besides the Cummins such as John Deere, Cats, etc.

Rudimentary, yes but it helps at times.

Two Stroke Detroits, you hold the injector rocker down momentarily to accomplish the same thing.

Now if that was done or not before the head was pulled is a good question. It does sound at this point like a bottom end and piston inspection is next on the list.

Mike. :)

Do you really think that's what Harvey was referring to? The point wasn't the method of diag, it was that he doesn't know what he's talking about, yet he feels the hands on mechanic is "running up a labor bill".

Have you listened around the engine? It should be louder on one side than the other? Louder from front or rear? Louder from above or below?

Are you familiar with the procedure for urinating into a strong wind?

You should try it.

THess, lite tapping could of been the lift pump letting you know it was going south, but since you hear it better with th oil filler cap off it be could a bearing.

A failing rod bearing should make a heavy thumping sound when listening down under the oil pan, not a light tick. A tick could just be the lift pump as suggested. Both my 12-valves made rattly noises listening to it running with the cap off. What does the tic sound like, light and tinny or dull & heavy, very loud or just somewhat louder than the engine, etc. ?

Robert only asked me to write a ten back followup to a letter to the editor I wrote ten years ago.

He has not invited me to write comments written to those who post here only to insult me.
