I was driving just a short time ago... . but now am on the side of the road:{

Heard a loud pop while climbing a hill then coasted to a stop on the other side. Thought I had blown a hose but no. Took off the afe and found there to be mucho end play on the compressor shaft probably an inch. Removed the hose I thought I had blown and it is full of oil. In fact right before I shut her down white smoke was starting to boil out of the exhaust as well as the oil pan vent hose.

So I have a friend on his way to tow me out of here but not sure what to do from there. I still have my factory turbo so I could put that back on but I'm guessing it is a bad idea to just fire it back up after that. Should I take the intercooler out and attempt to clean the oil out of it along with the associated lines? How do you recommend you clean that out? Do I need to remove the head or should I just run it? The comprsoor blades are worn way down easily a half inch of them are missing. What do ya think that will have done to the motor?

What to do?????

Same thing happened to me about three weeks ago... How old is your turbo? Shane or Brady will help you out no doubt about that, but that sucks...

And didn't you used to have an sps62???

Never mind found your thread...

Have you towed with that 64 yet? What did II do about your 62?

Okay mine was a SPS62 and had about 30,000 miles on it. I don't know what happened either, but I was doing the same thing. I was stopped at a light, it turned green got flowing with traffic and then more like a (POP) than bang! and white smoke. I called I. I. and their going to help me, but they were a couple days out before they could have a turbo ready, so I went with the HT 71 series QD64 because I needed a turbo and my truck ASAP. It's my only means of transportation, so down time is not a option. I'm going to send this one back and have it upgraded to a Silver Bullet.

I find it odd. You rarely ever hear of HTB2's, B-1's, super B's, etc taking a crap. And when they usually do, its because they were pushed to hard. I wonder why the bearings are failing in these? The last one I saw fail, II said it was due to oil contamination.

They did replace it for free though, so that was really awesome. :D

Jeff, its not just phat shafts the failures are not brand specific since they are using the same borg warner parts then any of the above you mention are just as likely to fail.

It's kind of like FASS issue you hear alot of issues but they also probably have the most aftermarket systems out there. . Just like II probably has the most aftermarket turbo's out there at this point (relatively speaking).

Mine too had bout 30k on it. I do oil analysis and my oil is not the problem.

I need to know what the recommended proceedure is for cleaning out the intercooler. Mine is full of oil hopefully that is all but how can you check to make sure there is no metal and also oil free?

Wow, I don't feel good about my new SPS62 I bought for the excursion project...

Anyways, no experience with cleaning the intercooler, but I would suggest removing it and running water through it (followed by compressed air) to force the contamination back out the inlet side. May wan't to do a primitive pressure check looking for leaks as well.

I would also remove the intake horn and heater grid and look for contamination laying up there in the intake valley (use a flash light and mirror too).

That sucks, I hope I. I. takes care of you and the damage isn't significant.

What kind of boost #'s have you seen with your turbo, what power level are you at?

After eating 4 nv5600's I no longer use the edge while towing so it was on zero. Boost #'s normally max out in the 30-35 range. I was loosing boost pressure yesterday and thought it was as a result of hose fatigue. I stopped and bought a new hose 30 min before the turbo let loose. The hose was starting to come apart. When the turbo popped I had less than 15 #'s because that was all I was able to achive.

My trailer was light with only one car on it.

my SPS62 has been making some funny noises. Dyno with it tommorrow and take it home. Sunday i'm putting the stocker back on and going a different route

yup, a boost leak will kill a turbo due to overspinning.

are all/most of these sps62 failures on 3rd CR trucks or are earlier gens having problems w/ them too?
