If you crawl under the truck and look up... on the passenger side of the rear of the transmission is a bolt with a head about 2" in diameter... its on a machined boss on the tail shaft a few inches from where the transfer case bolts to the transmission... .

To be honest I didn't look to see if there's one on the drivers side... but would someone share what's behind that fastener..... just a spot they needed to get a machine too into when they machined the casting... . a snap ring... or something magic... and unknown...

thanks for your help...

On my '01, if I am looking in the right place, there appears to be a back up lite switch with wires attached. I do not have what you describe.

Your welcome Jim but I actually took that photo some time ago to show the B/U switch but luckily captured the "cap" thing too. I think there's one on both sides and I remember looking up and wondering what the heck it is myself. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will tell us what is is.

Okay, so I am blind, it is behind the exhaust hanger tho, so that is my excuse and I am sticking to it:-laf

Here is a partial scan of my FSM, the book was too big to fit my scanner, it appears to be a plug for the shift rail detent.

PS: The top pic is the side plug and the bottom pic is the top plug so there must be two of them.

Nick, are you sure that's it? I thought that plug was on top of the transmission. I can't tell.

You know, I rebuilt an automatic transmission once. It was a piece of cake - all I needed was a socket set and a good pair of snap ring pliers.

I thought manual transmissions were simpler, but looking at the FSM there is a ton of specialized tooling required to get the thing apart!

I think so, in the top picture. Some of the page didn't show up so it is hard to see. But in the top picture they talk about the crossover cam plug and in the bottom picture they talk about the shift rail plug, so I think there are two of those plugs and each has a spring and detent plunger.
