I would like to replace the brake shoes (rear, of course) with something a bit more aggressive. Have not found any reviews online on what works best. I don't ride my brakes hard, so don't need exotic materials to prevent fade, just brakes that grab a bit better with out putting my foot through the floor. (I know about the cylinder upgrade so no need to mention that).
Any ideas on what brand to try?

I found that the original equipped were very good and that's what I replaced my, then, 95 with. 60/70% of your breaking power is with the front disk anyway.

I don't know if this is your problem or not, but I had a similar issue with my truck where I had very little brakes on the rear. On my truck with drums, there is a load leverage bar that mounts between the rear-axle shock mount and above on the frame is a load sensing type device. When a load is placed in the bed or a trailer coupled to the hitch, the rear suspension squats and this lever moves up... . which in turn, allows more hydraulic pressure to the brakes in the rear drums. I had a problem with this and some here suggested taking this out of the brake line circuit. I chose not to do this... . but what i did do was to add a 2" steel shaft to the length of that rod and now I have brakes lthat actually work!!I don't know all the trade names for the parts, but my description should allow you to see what I'm talking about. To prove or confirm this the faulty item... simply remove the bar from it lower shock mount and temporarily raise it and secure it higher to simulate a load in the bed. Go for a test drive and I'll bet you'll have better brakes. Something to try!!!!

It's the load sensing proportioning valve... . mine went bad and wouldn't allow any fluid through. $700 plus for a new one or a $20 hose that bypassed it... . I love my brakes with the bypassed valve.

Hard to beat EGR

I had the EGR shoes the last time.

They are incredible... ... . Super grabby. .

Very expensive $$$$$$$$$$$$$

I now have the Wagner units and they are noticably weaker.

I no longer tow heavy with the 97 so the wagners are ok.

Haven't found anything so far. Brake shoes run between $29 and $200 with no explanation or testing to explain why spending more is better.

There is no 'load leverage bar' on my '95, so that can't be the problem.
Not sure if there is a 'load sensing proportioning valve'. Will have to dig into the manual.

The 'load sensing prop. valve' is what I was talking about but could not remember the trade name for it..... Anway, let us know!
