Duluth Diesel,

But I like the layout of the PowerCore the way it's pleated compared to the Cone style filters. I like the double layer type affair instead of just the pleated surface of the cone. Oh well, Beggars can't be choosey.

Same here.

It appears that the 4090 has the inverted second cone, not the 4091. I agree, that should be clarified on the website. They don't even give their dealers that info, and that's not cool.

just got my 4091, now I remember why I don't like the Amsoil corporation. The filter does not have the inverted cone as described on the website, no notes anywhere saying which models do or don't, and my package arrived with all the information for their nutritional (scam) supplements. I will be sending the filter back and going a different route, who else produces nanofiber air filters?

Yep, and we've covered this. Currently there is no PowerCore filter that works for our truck, at least not off the shelf. If someone wants to actually take the ball and run with it, and beat the bushes a little trying to look more into PowerCore stuff, have at it. I've tried, believe me. I've even followed up with Donaldson Corporate during the past month. They tell me they make nothing that will work. What I'd love to find is a BHAF Nanofiber, a direct Nanofiber replacement to the AH19037 Fleetguard, for example. Come up with that, and you've got my attention. But as far as I can tell, the AMSOIL Nanofiber offerings are as close as we can get at the moment.

First Impressions

OK, after pm'ing with Duluth I decided to try the filter out anyway. First impressions... big chunk of my smile factor is gone in the way of the Aurora's almost ear splitting turbo whine, it is considerably quieter than the Afe! :{ I don't know if this has to do with the media or the fact that the end of the filter is closed off, and I am sure the pvc adapter I am using temporarily is probably acting somewhat like a silencer due to it's thickness. It does appear to flow sufficient air though (it equates to 12"x16. 5" of surface area), the smoke cloud clears up quickly as the turbo spools up, but the loss of a good portion of the whine and the sound of a thousand shop-vacs aimed at you as the turbo just begins to spool will be sorely missed! This is probably a moot point though, seeing as my plans are to fab a fully shielded cold air induction to go where the passenger side battery resides. I don't think much turbo noise will escape that set up. :( Oh well, some prices must be paid here and there. I will post updates as the plan unfolds and pics when everything is complete. Now, if we could just get Amsoil to drop the vitamin supplements...

Wanted to say thanks to all the nice folks for the long, informative and interesting thread. Way more info here than at the local coffee shop. Ive always tried to add something to my truck on a weekly basis time permitting. I have a bhaf now and was looking for something a little better (pretty too) that wasnt 4 times the price. It looks like the the Amsoil part #4090 (which has the inverted second cone) or the 4091. Both seem to be a good choice without dropping big $$$.

where can I find pics of these filters you guys are talking about? When I go to amsoil.com I see that the part numbers for the donaldson filters start at 5000. thanks for any help

I finally got my filter after waiting over two weeks (Amsoil computers were down for three days when I ordered on the 14th). I now have a cold air intake with a dry cleanable filter. I sure hope this thing filters as it should because I sure put a lot of time into this setup. I used the 4510 filter, which has a 4. 5" ID flange connected to the turbo hose with a 2" wide piece of 4. 5" OD exhaust pipe. I built my filter box out of 1/4" thick Plexiglas since I don't have nice metal working tools and besides this is lighter and it looks cool (until it gets dirty anyway).

I started out by making a mock up air box out of cardboard including a cardboard filter matching the dimensions of the Amsoil unit since I didn't have the real one in hand until today.

My OE replacement inner fender didn't come with the factory air box studs so I installed 3/8" bolts stacked with flat washers of different amounts to make the box level and then on top of that went lock washers and nuts with blue loctite (don't want them coming loose as the fender liner would have to come out to fix). Next went on 1. 5" fender washers with 1. 5" rubber washers on top of that for the air box to sit on. The Plexiglas is all glued together with a fast drying supper glue type clear glue and then strengthened with metal brackets all attached using pop rivets. I installed the OE air duct into the fender and also cut a 4" hole into the cowl connected to the air box with a piece of aluminum dryer vent. The black plastic fitting on the air box is an RV slip connector, which is glued and riveted in place. I had to cut the top corner of the air box down a bit to clear the corner of the hood. I installed adhesive backed reflective thermal barrier to the turbo sides of the box. The turbo also has a Larry B stainless shield to keep most of the heat away.

I have only driven this a few miles and don't have any real good data with back to back comparisons but I think it lowered the EGTs by a minimum of 25 deg. and maybe more. I think it will make a much bigger difference in the summer when it's hot out and the radiator is pumping lots of heat under the hood. It was in the 20's outside when I checked it this morning. The turbo noise is, as expect, louder and I hope I can live with it. I do have the ring installed since going OTR. For around town I would have it out but when driving all day every day it gets pretty annoying. My cool down time is much decreased. It will be interesting to see how it does as I have time to test it more. I can't wait to see how much this helps in the summer. My e-brake has a deeper sort of cave sound to it now. It maybe sounds a little more like a big truck now.

Now for some pictures.

Nice work!!! Man that looks nice. It will be interesting to see how that works. With that box ducted into the firewall, I can understand how the turbo noise would be increased. Looks sharp!

That filter just has a flat, closed nose, right?

That REALLY looks nice! I especially appreciate the pic of the filter element as installed, it gives a good visual of size and shape in relation to the engine compartment. The included turbo heat shield was a nice touch as well, and probably a necessity since the box is Plexiglas... :)

Thanks guys, yes the filter is just a flat closed end. I forgot to mention for those that might not know, I went to the Amsoil filter from a standard BHAF with no shield other then the Larry B one on the turbo.

I asked the folks at AMSOIL HQ about putting an Outerwears on the Nanofiber filters. They actually tried it, and decided not to recommend it. They were considering the product to market under their name as well. The Outerwears is good for the paper BHAF exposed element since the paper filter is sensitive to moisture. The Nanofiber filters are not affected by moisture, so the Outerwears would only be there as a pre-filter. AMSOIL found that the Outerwears cover actually restricted airflow, so they decided against it. I have actually seen and handled the Outerwears they had made for the eaau4090 filter. Since they decided against it, I decided against it as well. I get down to Corporate AMSOIL once in a while and harass some of the managers when I have questions.

Just my . 02

My question is: What are you going to charge me for one of those boxes? Oo.

I think you are going to have a lot of guys wanting you to build this box. Or at least make the plans available. -Jason

I don't know how serious you guys are about wanting a box like this but I would be willing to consider building some if there was enough genuine interest. A few things would have to be changed slightly from what I have because it hangs slightly into the battery tray so if you have a battery that fully fills the tray this would not work as is. Also the mounts would have to be redesigned to work with the factory air box studs some way. Another concern is that I have not tested this thing at all yet so I have no idea how it will hold up to vibration and under hood heat over time. I think it will probably be fine but can't be 100% sure yet.

Edit: I took the dollar figure out of here. No since talking about that at this time. This really needs to have a good test first so I know if the plastic will hold up. If it does hold up and there is any interest in the future then fine.

Also I don't have any plans to share really. I could probably give some basic measurements if someone wanted them. I don't have angle figures or anything like that.

Right now I need to hit the road and get some money flowing again (RV transporting). I do put on a lot of miles so that will give it a good test.

Thanks to Duluth Diesel for all your filter research.

Thats a damn nice looking filter setup. I am looking to switch over to a amsoil filter, so post up how the filter works out for ya.

Will do. I just changed oil so it will be a few months before I test it at 25k so that should give some idea, although it's winter so might be less dust. I know the paper BHAF filtered good enough to give good readings on silicone but that K&N drop it I started out with gave me a 51 PPM silicone reading and that was with the factory oil job and the edges all greased up heavy.

Well heck, you're more than welcome! I love playing with this stuff, and even though I have taken some heat for what I have done here, I still enjoy the heck out of this stuff. Awesome job with that box! I'm glad that I am an AMSOIL dealer based in Superior, WI. It is pretty easy for me to go down to HQ and harass the tech guys down there and raid their warehouse shelves measuring filters. I'm glad my work and research has been helpful to others on here.

Oo. Oo. Oo.
