Finally got some time to get the BMK21 installed on my truck. My friends at Performance 4X4 fabbed up the mount for me and put the hoses together. Talk about simple. Fits nicely and no wiggle or movement. I paid extra to have the nice billet cap for the return line.

Looks good... Got a pic of the connection at the oil filter housing? hmm might get one of these. .

whats the hose clamped stick on the old egr cooler line doing?

-j

I'll get a pic of the connector on top of the oil filter when it gets light, its 3:30AM and just got off work. That stick is a jury-rig strap that holds cap on the 'former' egr cooler line after the egr cooler went AWOL... ...

Did all the parts for the bypass come in a kit or did you need to order some pieces separately? If not, what do you need to order besides the filter and mount? What does the complete package cost?

It comes with everything you need. I'll get you a price quote and post a link later today.

Ken,

How many miles are you going on oil changes? I know the factory manual says no longer than 7500 miles, even with synthetic, but that is with the fuel efficiency killer still on the truck?

I'm thinking of doing this to mine.

Thanks

what is the advantage of doing this?????

You just can't extend the oil change interval with the DPF intact. Because it fires fuel into the exhaust stroke to burn off soot down the pipe, it contaminates the oil after just 4000 miles. Off it comes! The bypass filter is designed to further clean the oil by removing soot less than 2 microns in size. I have Amsoil OE brand oil in right now and it was tested at 6600 miles and declared to be good for another interval (7500 miles) by the lab, so I will test again at 14K miles to see whats what.

You can further extend your oil change interval past the minimum 25K range that Amsoil guarantees for its DME diesel oil by using a bypass filter to screen out soot and other nasties. Then you have a lab analyze the oil to check for condition. Large trucking companies use this for their fleets, why not us, eh?

BTW, I am using their OE oil which is recommended for 7500 mile interval, but my lab already cleared it for twice that (that was before I added the bypass).

It's a shame that the DPF and EGR systems are so detrimental in so many ways.

Got mine off and couldn't be happier.

Keep us posted on your oil analysis as it comes, especially as it gets higher in miles. I'm interested in doing synthetic and a bypass on my truck.

I think the decreased fuel mileage and increased engine oil usage ruins the clean air benefit, IMHO.

There wasn't much clean air benefit to begin with. My '03 is already 90% clean. It wouldn't have been that difficult to get to 95% clean with no EGR and a DPF that would hardly require regeneration, because the exhaust is so clean to start with. The last 4% is the cause of all the difficulty, and will have no effect on the environment, except to accelerate MMGW, if you believe in that theory.

How do 'lab costs' + bypass equipment costs, figure into oil change savings? I'm spending $70 every 7K-8K mile oil change. Pls. advise.

Walter,

I use Oil Analyzers for 25 bucks and the bypass was about $150 plus tax and shipping. So for 50K miles I will spend $200 to $250 on analysis and the bypass. You'll spend almost $450 on oil changes.

Thanks KLauber;
Pls. clarify, as the numbers not adding up; you didn't include any oil change costs? How many miles/oil change? I'm trying to make sense of many blogs on this topic of "Oil bypass or not!". Thanks for response.

No oil change required unless the lab analysis says so.

That's the whole point of a bypass kit... it prolongs the length of the oil and hence the lack of oil changes.

I've read, on TDR I believe, where people have gone 100,000 miles without changing their oil.

Just wanted to drop a friendly reminder about this pic, if you have it, Ken. ;)
