Gents,

So the next question here is this. In NC, they dont have a road test for diesels, just gas. I have to have a "safety" inspection, cumlative for lights, brakes and windshieild wipers to pass. Now the big question, will my Quad Adrenaline on PL 10 fail me... as in I need to test at the highest power level? The state doesnt even mandate this yet... but if so, I would hate to have to disconnect the funny box every year to go stock and test and go back. Never heard of the Opacicity test (spelling ?). What does that all entail from ya'll state(s)? Just hearing the word, I KNOW that I would fail it on PL 10. LOL, just yesterday, my friend driving behind me, told me I looked like a coal fire burning in the wind. I laughed, but thought of the reprocussions later... . dang it. Any ideas for what a good moderately conservative republican state could be looking at for 2010? Mr. Barlow, I would love to hear your opinion (seriously) on this opinion. Thanks again y'all.

Kind Regards,

John

John,

I'm sorry, I can't answer your questions. I don't know anything about the "quad adrenaline" you mentioned so don't know what effects it has on emissions.

I've never been through an emissions test. There are no emissions tests in the region of TX where I live but I think there are some type of tests in Houston and Dallas, huge cities that probably have some smog. I don't know anything about the tests but don't think they are specific for diesels.

When other members refer to an "opacity" test I'm guessing the term refers to a device that measures exhaust smoke. If your truck emits black smoke under acceleration you would probably be a prime target in some of the states that are influenced by tree huggers.

If the NC legislature and governor's mansion are occupied by conservative politicians your state probably won't implement heavy handed emissions testing but I don't know NC politics.

To each his/her own there is good and bad everywhere. So as others have said this will eventually trickle down to most states, and in the big picture is a good thing. Do you really want to be pouring black smoke into the air you are breathing. I am not a tree hugger by any means but lets look at the really big picture here and this is a good thing, its not like we can just change the air filter and we are all good. So lets see the aftermarket step up and work with this to produce products that are effective and clean.

And my 2 Cents...

If (they) want to make an impact on pollution, why don't (they) start by cleaning up China and really make a dent in things, and other countries for that matter. I guess starting to clean up the world is a good thing BUT, if and when the US is clean from pollution... we are still being tremindously impacted by other countries that have no polution laws, heck, some countries aren't even aware of smog controls. But back in CA, (they) have to spend millions on smogging Diesels... (they) are crying about the buget, save some $$ and worry about other things... Spend that $$ on something worthwhile like schools, gang control, fire service, parks. I can see it now... race cars with Cats on them...

For those of you who are complaining about removing a smarty box or the like, try this on for size... I used to swap the engine on my VW every other year for the smog test because it would fail the visual, but could pass the sniffer. What a pain in the butt, at least now it's exempt.

That's pretty extreme but if a man is determined to drive his car or truck like he wants it that is a good solution.

Your story reminds me of a sailor who was a neighbor back in the '60s. He had a car he loved, a Ford Falcon Sprint which was a Falcon two-door hardtop. His had a larger engine, a modified 289ci V8 that was pretty quick. He didn't want it driven on the salted roads of PA in the winter so he disassembled the car and stored it in parts in the attic of a building where he worked. Some would have called him a hotrodder or car enthusiast, some would say he was nuts.

The stock VW engine can be removed in about 20-30 minutes. The fast motor had dual carburetors and external oil coolers. That one would take a couple of hours, so really it was about a 1/2 day's worth of labor to just to pass a smog test and another 1/2 day to get back to what I wanted.

I concur with you. Leaving behind large clouds of black smoke in traffic really puts our trucks in a "BAD LIGHT" so to speak, and it certainly is not a positive, mechanically or enviromentally. I have been guilty of this myself, but it is very apparent other drivers are not impressed. It is most likely part of the reason for the push to test.

We welcome anyone unless they come here and try to bring California (liberal) political attitudes and goals with them.
HaHa, :-laf I guess I have traveled the wrong parts cuz the only baggage I bring in is money and the smile on my face yet my plate labels me like convect near a police station.

Seems as tho Texas is the only state with the nads to talk seccession. Save me some land with trees. I'll be moving soon, Moe

texas is unique, i built in houston area for 7 yrs and Ft Worth for a yr. menard for 6mos. moved back to CA 27 yrs ago go between CA and NM. both my daughters and their families moved to Dallas area first chance they got.

love the state of TX, people, freedoms, and politics; hated the weather.

because of the population growth it's only a matter of time till even TX will have to comply hope it don't break your TX spirit.

i just reread my reply and realized i forgot to mention the fabulous bar b que. i'm talking about the rib joints in the country, with the black smoke billowing out the windows and the greasy brisqit.

here's one for you Simplysmn, about 20 yrs ago i was proceeding to get onto 101 from Salinas. there were all these CHP's on the on-ramp looking up into the trees, they waved me slowly down the ramp when i got to the bottom right before the freeway i asked a CHP what was going on. he said they were trying to locate the sniper in those trees that was shooting people as they drove by.

i guess they were hoping he would stick his head out and take a shot at me. i was the only vehicle on the on-ramp

TDR members, fellow Dodge-Cummins owners, and good-old-boys would overlook your home state and welcome you . . . unless you dressed like the late Michael Jackson and spoke politics like Jane Fonda.

It will be at least another five generations before population growth out here at my farmhouse in Crosby County is even large enough to fill all the tables at the closest steak house or BBQ joint in Dickens. The closest town to me is Crosbyton, Texas, population 1,750 (est. ), which is 10 miles. The only pollution we have here is dirt when the wind blows.

Well here is my deal, If I have a conservative tree hugger behind me in a Prius (that when they pass you, it screams..... "I AM GAYYYYYYY") and rides your bumper (roughly 5-10") and when the opprotunity arises to pass me (as I drive withing STATE sactioned speed limits) and DOESNT pass but continues to ride your bumper, I jump to power level ten, go from 55 to 60 and turn that tree kissing white colored car into a p-o'ed black colored car whose driver learns about something we call "Defensive Driving".

Also, I am old school... . I hear CTD and the first thing I think of is a overpowerd sexy looking truck, who can pull anything, and at WOT can smoke out anything that will remember they are driving a prius and has a anger issue.....

Regards,

J

I think liberals have the market cornered on tree huggers. Can't say I've ever met a conservative tree hugger. Conservationist, sure.

Sorry but that's not really a valid argument and I don't agree with you.

Of course few people actually want to "pour black smoke into the air" and no one wants to breathe it but that is a bogus argument or, at best, exaggeration.

That condition doesn't truly exist anywhere and heavy-handed regulation like in CA won't change it.

Underlying almost all treehugger initiatives is not a true concern for the environment but is simply an anti-capitalism, anti-free market, anti-freedom, anti-prosperity movement by liberals hiding behind the pollution straw man.

Liberals like limousines for themselves, walking shoes, bicycles, tiny three cylinder boxes, and public transportation for the rest of us.

Did you ever notice how some devout treehuggers will torch a beautiful and expensive new home or subdivision because the home or homes endanger their beloved habitat? How about the pollution caused by the fire... ... it doesn't matter if libs do it. How about all the limousine liberals who live in MA, NY, CA, or DC with their chauffer-driven luxury cars or their private jets? Their pollution doesn't matter. Odd isn't that?

CA's unreasonable and excessive regulation may be right for the LA basin and Phoenix but it is wrong for America. It won't "trickle down" to Texas in my lifetime. We are independent-minded, stubborn, and mostly freedom-loving conservatves here.

Sorry, I'm not buying the environmental wacko line.
